Newegg + Other Rebate SCAM!

SAMS1140 273 512 April 24, 2016 at 02:09 PM
Lately, I have seen many deals from Newegg.com (mail in rebate deal of-course).

Like slickdeals doesn't allow deals from new ebayers or have certain criteria for people selling on amazon..why no action is being taken towards these lousy companies that don't provide rebate in timely manner. Why reminder is not given to buyers about estimated rebate time: 4 months for Newegg!! minimum. My suggestion to slickdeal (as this is community driven) is to give headsup in their forum in regards to expected rebate delivery date ( just a window).

My story- filled rebate last year in Aug - Funds were expected to be released in Dec - here I m in April 2016 - NO FUNDS!

The promotion "NETGEAR EX2700 N300 WiFi Range Extender Essentials Edition" is promotion number 63465 and it runs from August 21, 2015, to August 27, 2015.

I don't even look at rebates as part of deals anymore... I simply add it to the cost...

probably lost in mail. instead of waiting till april you should have called in jan and have them resent it to you. i have never been denied a rebate in 10 years. they are a hassle but no one is forcing us to buy products with these rebates.

[QUOTE=SAMS1140;84214907]Lately, I have seen many deals from Newegg.com (mail in rebate deal of-course). ...

Thanks for the good-suggestion Sams, but the only way these rebate "warnings" could happen is if buyers (like you and I) post our experiences (on Newegg rebate-offers, or any other rebate-deals that are problematic), -- this will at least give people fair-warning about which companies don't always honor their promises, (or possibly scam people).
Slickdeals is in this business to make a profit, so they're not going to risk alienating businesses that provide their revenue, (you've probably noticed some "front page" fire-deals that weren't so great?, that's because Slickdeals is "selling" those deals for "profit", ... the bottom-line).
Although Slickdeals isn't just a "community forum", -- (it's set-up to make money, like any other business), but the good-part is that our customer-feedback can inform and help other customers, -- so please keep-up your efforts to warn others about companies whose "rebates" don't get honored, (like the one you've listed from Newegg). ... (Over the years, I've come to the point where I only purchase "free and clear" deals; if there are rebate-forms, or other hoops to jump through, I'll no-longer purchase those deals. This practice has saved me a lot of frustration {& time!}, and in the long-run I haven't missed-out on much). heart

I think slickdeal is a great platform and these heads-up will only help them improve and force crooks like newegg to change their business policies.

Like I mentioned previously- if slickdeals take different measures to assist the community and make them aware of fraud and stuff...why not have a link with all these "mail in rebate" offers where customers can get insight of what they are getting into.

Slickdeals has already been dumbed down enough, we really don't need them to babysit us through everything. Instead of relying on someone else to do the work for you learn to take responsibility for your own actions.

There are plenty of topics on what do with rebates, but the majority really is common sense.

Companies offer rebates because they want you to forget about it. They hope you don't follow them up on it. That's how both the rebate processor and sponsor (Newegg, in this case) make money.

Velocity, the company Newegg uses for their rebates, are slower to pay than some other processors out there but they are very reliable.

I shouldn't need to say this as I believe it is common sense but for those who lack it:

1. Scan/save/take photos (clear and high quality) of everything to do with your rebate before you mail it. Don't be lazy.

2. Read the rebate terms and/or registration form. Every offer can have different requirements. Pay close attention to what they ask for. Send them exactly what they request. Generally this is the registration form, invoice (not order confirmation) and UPC sticky taped to the registration form (Velocity requests UPCs be stuck to a blank page when there are multiple UPCs). If they ask for anything else then make sure to include that too.

3. Mail the documentation on time. I can't stress how important this is. The earlier the better. Every rebate has a postmark deadline. Generally this is either 30 or 60 days depending on the specific offer and/or processor. Some are shorter (I have seen more than a few say 7 days on them). The mailing deadline is always listed on the registration form or in the rebate terms. If you mail it late then you will get denied. The terms are clear on that. If that happens then that isn't the processor's fault, that is your fault. If for some reason you receive the product after the rebate postmark deadline (eg backordered product) then you should return the product or contact the merchant for advice on what to do next.

4. About a week after you mail the rebate, check your rebate status every few days to see if the online status shows received. For Velocity this can take anywhere from a week to a month (sometimes more) depending on how busy they are. If you do not see that your rebate has been received 30 days after mailing it, call/chat/email them (Velocity) asking what you should do next. During busy periods (eg after Black Friday/Christmas) they may tell you to wait a bit longer. If nothing has shown up 30 days after mailing it can mean your submission has been lost. If you call them they will generally tell you to resubmit copies (which you should have).

5. Once the online status shows received, check the status at least once a week. With Velocity you generally won't see any change for a month (maybe two). Once you see the status change to "Your submission has been processed and your response has been mailed" pay attention to the date they list.

6. If you do not receive your check/card by that date then you can call them and ask what happens next. I have had a few checks show up a few days after that date so you may want to wait a week after the displayed date before calling.

If the rebate processor does not do anything to help you after contacting them multiple times then you can contact the merchant you bought the product from and ask them for assistance. In the case of Newegg they will look in to your issue if Velocity are not helping and will either sort it out or give you a courtesy gift card instead.

In the majority of cases the entire process is painless. Mistakes can happen and things can go missing, but as long as you have copies and pay attention to what's going on then you can see when something is wrong and act on it straight away.

I have submitted 820 rebates with various processors over the last ~3 years and I have received every single one of them. It is your responsibility to keep on top of things. This is your money. Make sure you get it.

What did they say when you contacted them?
How many times has a rebate from Newegg not arrived?
