For $50? Don't buy a set, buy a 8" chef knife, a serrated/bread knife and a paring knife. For brand, go with Victorinox with Fibrox handles. The one thing I'd add to that list, would be a chef steel, for maintaining the edge (not sharpening). I checked on Amazon and the prices are high at the moment, and it seems like it has been awhile since deals were posted on SD, but they used to be fairly regular, if you keep an eye out I'm sure you can get the 3 knives in that range, with the steel being extra.

Don't forget about the above set as well if you do not need the steak knives. Better quality and includes the Santoku knife. Cheapest I have seen.

Yep, it's that time of year again! Nice to see Macy's dropped the price before F&F discount a bit.

You might find comments from those who own or have used these knives in previously posted deal threads.

I got these two years ago at target. Pretty good for the price point. There a definitely ones that are nicer but for the price it's great.

Twin not international is a plus but per the description, these are stamped not forged so I'm out...

Got this set when it was $120 on a previous deal from Macy's. Highly recommended it, best friend got a set for themselves. The knife block counts as one piece (I had incorrectly assumed it was 15 pieces of cutlery). Great set, always hand wash them.

We have this set. Pretty sharp out of the box, but I think it's cheap steel cause one of them had the tip break off from light use. Never had that happen to a kitchen knife.

I concur! Those are the three knives that I use most. If I had to live without one of them, it'd be the bread knife. Buy the best knives that you can afford. You don't need a bunch of knives, just a few good ones! You won't regret it.
