This is a great price for this receiver. It matches previous sales that were popular. Regular price is $1499 but with Monday's code, it's $847 with free shipping.

The ad states in store only, but it's also available online with free shipping until their warehouse runs out.

Why is this stuck on $849? Why not $699?

Comparable AVRs to the Onkyo RX-RZ900 within the same price range and featureset are Denon X4200W, Pioneer SC-95, and Yamaha RX-A2050. Note that even though it is 9.2-capable, the Denon has only 7 onboard maps so you will need an external amp if you want to drive the additional two channels if you are looking for 9-channel output; I think the SC-95 has 9 onboard amps so you're good to go out of the box for 5.x 4 or 7.x.2 Atmos setups.

Some folks prefer the RZ900 for its toroidal transformer while others prefer the Denon for the Audyssey MultiEQ XT32; I don't know nearly enough about the Pioneer or Yamaha although I've heard some good things about the PIoneer--the 9 onboard amps is definitely a plus over the Denon if you want Atmos w/o having to spend extra on an external amp. It's a toss-up between the Onkyo and the other three AVRs, but that's still a pretty decent price on the RZ900 considering that folks were all over the Denon X4200 that Fry's had on sale for $897 a couple of weeks ago.

Side note/tangent--if AVR weight meant anything, then I can tell that the amps in the Denon X4200W probably aren't as robust as those used in my 7.1 Denon 3808ci (also 7 onboard amps)--the 4200W is definitely a bit lighter than my *ancient* 3808ci (made in Japan BTW, unlike any of the current Denon AVR models 4200 and below)...28 lbs for the 4200W vs. 39 lbs for the 3808ci.

I purchased this unit when it was previously on sale -- very happy with it. But no-doubt the other competitive units are equally good, with each bringing it's own pros/cons to the table.

Question -- Anyone have a recommendation on a power amp to hook this up to in order to run full 7.2.2? Don't want to spend a lot of $$$, but also don't want to get a POS amp either... Thanks

Nice summary of the different AVRs. Another difference is that the Onkyo RZ800 and RZ900 are both THX certified, which isn't a huge deal, but is something the Denon and Pioneer don't have. Output wise, at 8 ohms per channel, the RZ900 has 140W, RZ800 has 135W, the SC95 has 760W for 7 or 9 channels total, and X4200W has 125W.

Don't forget you can use an old receiver as the external amp. Crown amps are recommended by many people.

I knew, but definitely had forgotten that -- thanks! No-doubt could get a cheap old (but solid) used stereo receiver for cheap. Will also take a look at the Crown amps. Thanks again.

Thanks, but too expensive (relative to budget/need) and I don't believe they have a stereo-only amp either... either monoblock or 5+ channel.

You are a Slick Dealer but you aren't signed up for Fry's promo codes? That's like Slick Deals 101. Instead you come on here begging for codes? Why? I'm thinking you aren't a real Slick Dealer and you have other reasons to take codes.

Just sign up. I don't see any reason anyone should give you a code.

I am signed up for weekly and daily codes, but I have not gotten one for today, I don't know if it's delayed or if they send out emails in batches for different regions. Also, could be that this code is for west coast, and not other regions. As the other guy said, I got yesterday's code, but that didn't work on this deal. Would be nice, that's all.

Thanks,

Oh, sorry, now I sound like a jerk. So sorry. I got mine at 4:35 AM and I checked with my pop and he got his at 6:20 AM.

I'd suggest writing about the delay to Fry's, but any regular Fry's shopper knows that Fry's is the Honey Badger of the retail world. They just don't care. shake head
