You can buy 4 x cedar dog ear picket fence boards @ $1.75 a piece at home depot and build your own. Just thought I'd mention it for those who are extra frugal

How does the self watering work in this? Also isn't 5.5" pretty short?

It's for outside... self-watering = rain?

you will have to install irrigation system like rainbird:

I have 2 of these. They're nice when they're on sale - this price is decent. They aren't as nice as the 4x8 bed I built myself though - it was pretty easy.

with that said, i might still pick up 2 more of these...and one day i'll build one of these [oregonstate.edu] - materials might be over $100 though.

will lowe's price match? i have a lowe's card (5% off) and need to get some other stuff from there anyway

EDIT: this would require lowe's actually carrying it. i thought that's where i got them on sale last year, but it may have been Home Depot.

For anyone that's considering a pre-made raised bed, for every extra kit you buy, you can usually stretch your raised bed an extra two plots instead of just one. In other words, you place two 4x4 beds 4' apart and just swing the facing boards out to form a single 4x12. Three kits for a 4x20, four kits for 4x28, etc.
Does depend on the joining hardware though. Some kits have angled pieces that make it difficult to connect the facing boards straight instead of at 90 degrees, but still can be done. Looks like it would work fine with this one, with corner pieces designed to connect boards at 90, 180, and 270 degrees.

Bought one last year from HD. Quality is very bad. Not recommend.

I would not recommend this. The boards warp quickly, and it is thin cedar. Better go the picket fence board like the above poster said, if you just want a cedar raised bed.

Depending on your location you can buy either redwood or cedar @$1.75-2.50 a board. All are untreated. Do not buy the painted/stained fir.

If you are at home depot try to find an associate that will help you. I got a few of my boards at 75% off if they are chipped or warped. Just be creative with the pieces.
