Depends on how old your computer is.

If your computer or laptop has HDMI output, then the TV can be used as a monitor since it has HDMI inputs. Some older computers and laptops only have VGA outputs (15-pin blue receptacles) and this TV does not have VGA input.

You can find VGA to HDMI converter cables for around $20~40, and if you have a desktop and can use a screwdriver, you can add a cheap video card with HDMI output.

I purchased this tv for my kitchen and it doubles as a computer monitor when I need it for music, Netflix or a recipe.

As a TV for normal programming (and Netflix), I can't complain about the picture, it actually looks pretty good. The tv speakers on the other hand are god awful. I've connected the tv to an old set of PC speakers.

As a monitor, this thing is merely Okay. I have spent a lot of time messing with settings, picture, color, contrast in an attempt to get it right. I've also had to set text to the largest available settings to read from a distance. Some pages/programs aren't optimized for such large text. At 32", 1080p is obviously a low resolution so you won't want to be sitting right on top of the tv...

For me, it gets the job done since this is not my main PC monitor.. To answer your question, yes it "can" be used as a monitor, but it's really only situationally practical as a monitor.

I picked this up last year. It's great for the price. It works ok a monitor once you disable dynamic contrast and overscan.

Brightness, contrast, and color need major adjustment out of the box. Black levels are very good for an inexpensive set which makes sense as it is PVA.

Viewing angles are ok but not as wide as an IPS display.

Overall a very good budget screen.

I bought one of these for my girlfriend for Christmas from Best Buy.
It works well for what we use it for, which is throwing up things from her Chromebook to the Chromecast on the screen. HD content looks crisp, but as others have stated, the speakers definitely leave you wanting. You will want some sort of sound bar/ surround sound / external speaker system if you have any significant noise while you use it.

It is a great buy for $150 and I am happy with the purchase. You do not get much better for your money for a 1080p TV than this Sharp.
