I have had this router for about 1.5 yrs and have never had an issue with it. I flashed it to DDWRT and never had any wireless issues. I got this router originally because the wifi would not reach my bedroom and now I stream HD movies on wireless with no issues. (on 5GHz band).

Only DDWRT issue I had was the furthest light on the right is always a solid red now (was a known issue) but it might be fixed by now, just to lazy/not worth reflashing.

I use this router with stock firmware and have never had an issue. Wifi is solid and the parental controls are really nice. Great router at this price.

What makes this router better than a $50 router? Curious.

I would suggest not to do firmware updates. With factory builds it works great. I purchased from newegg in Sep 2015 @144 plus tax.
It worked great until i did update. I had to do lot of troubleshooting to fix all open issues and a lot of trouble setting up L2TP VPNs as well. Believe me, Asus support on technical side is not so good, i would rate average as they kept on giving generic solutions without getting into core.

In last month, i did mistake of updating again and now i often get reconnect issues. More or less speed issues. With factory build - i would suggest it runs safe and sound , so unless you wanna flash it with dd wrt or use everything it offers ... don't touch .. use as it comes out of box.. there wont be issues.

price wise, looks okay but C7/C9 also get the job done if someone is looking for cheaper option.

This router is a beast . We use about 10-15 maybe more wifi/Ethernet devices in my house and this baby handles them all without a problem . Gives me every last Mbps that I get from my internet provider .

Is this router worth the extra 60 bucks it costs over the T-Mobile branded AC1900 Asus router? The fact that this one is a little easier to flash to 3rd party firmwares since it's not locked down is not a big deal to me.
