What Is Amazon Echo?

Amazon Echo is designed around your voice. It's hands-free and always on. With seven microphones and beam-forming technology, Echo can hear you from across the room - even while music is playing. Echo is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with immersive sound. Amazon Echo connects to Alexa, a cloud-based voice service, to provide information, answer questions, play music, read the news, check sports scores or the weather, and more - instantly. All you have to do is ask. Echo begins working as soon as it detects the wake word. You can pick Alexa or Amazon as your wake word.

Far-field Voice Recognition

Tucked under the light ring on Echo is an array of seven microphones. These sensors use beam-forming technology to hear you from any direction. With enhanced noise cancellation, Amazon Echo can hear you ask a question even while it's playing music. Echo uses on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. When Echo detects the wake word, it lights up and streams audio to the cloud, where we leverage the Alexa Voice Service to recognize and respond to your request.

Always Getting Smarter

Alex-the brain behind Amazon Echo-is built in the cloud, so it is always getting smarter. The more you use Echo, the more it adapts to your speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preferences. And because Echo is always connected, updates are delivered automatically. We are always adding new capabilities to Echo. Recently, we've added streaming music from Pandora, audiobooks from Audible, Google Calendar access, live sports scores and schedules, traffic reports, Amazon.com re-ordering, control of connected devices with WeMo and Philips Hue, and more.

Advanced Audio Design

Amazon Echo has been fine-tuned to deliver crisp vocals with dynamic bass response. Its dual downward-firing speakers produce 360 degree omni-directional audio to fill the room with immersive sound. Echo provides hands-free voice control for Amazon Music, Prime Music, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn. Plus, Echo is Bluetooth-enabled so you can stream other popular music services like Spotify and iTunes from your phone or tablet.

Connected Home

Use Amazon Echo to switch on the lamp before getting out of bed, turn on the fan or space heater while reading in your favorite chair, or dim the lights from the couch to watch a movie - all without lifting a finger...or even raising your voice. Echo works with devices such as lights and switches from Belkin WeMo, Philips Hue, and Wink. Starter kits are available for easy setup.

Certainly paranoid for the year 2016. Maybe in 5 years such paranoia will be legit.

However can you imagine the class action Lawsuit today if they were listening and transferring/saving that info when users were not expecting the device to do so?

I think the paranoia is justified - lol - that being said we were one of the invited that got to buy an Echo before they were available to everyone. We love it and can't imaging not having it - we just ordered the Dot for the bedroom.

We discussed the idea of 'Big Brother' (sister) listening and decided we didn't have anything to hide Smilie

Seriously, technology wise there would have been a HUGE spike in our data usage if everything Echo heard was transmitted to the good people at Amazon (or elsewhere).

Our Echo responds to the wake word Alexa - the TV accidently triggers her sometimes if there is a character with the same name.

Could the future bring a list of 'wake words' that Echo or similar devises could be listening to and transmitting to some hypothetical database to be used for nefarious purposes? Sure - but who says our other devices can't do that now?

lol

1984 came and went....

I'm on the fence, but the echo has been out for a little while. Any chance of a newer model in the near future? (I'm not talking the Dot or Tap, but a newer echo)

Even if it was listening to everything, it'd be like you were super famous and on a relatity show! Millions of people will be listening to your every word; your thoughts will inspire a nation!

Lol; i would be more concerned with phones giving permission to have unrestricted access to their mic, camera, and GPS to thousands of apps. Just because your phone doesn't have a "wake word" doesn't mean that it's not listening and recording everything. Same with laptops that always come with Mics and cameras now

Thanks for mentioning that. I had that offer in my amex portal. I didn't buy the echo when it was $99 because I thought it was another useless thing but then I got the Dot recently and it's really a nice device.

I've got a $30 best buy gc, wondering if it's worth the price, what are some real common uses of this device that makes it worth the price, or is this one of those luxuries devices that only the rich buy like bidets lol

I had the same question. Does anyone have an available coupon they could test?

Okay, so for those of us without the Amex $25 off coupon, is there a way to knock it down a bit more at either Staples, Best Buy, or Home Depot?

I just bought our first Echo several weeks ago and I have a Dot on order, so I need a little more sweetener for the second Echo. Wink

I guess I don't need to add that my wife and I love our Echo. Smilie

Not impossible, but unlikely. They have been performing cloud-based updates on a regular basis. There really isn't a reason to update the hardware at this point - most of the work is done in the cloud.
