I'm the OP and just wanted to come back and post my experience on the Surface Book thus far after having owned it for a day.

Some background on me: I like new tech and tend to trade up to a new laptop every 6-9 months by virtue of seeking out good deals and then selling my old machines for essentially what I got them for. My past three machines were:

- Dell XPS 13 - i5/256/8gb RAM - FHD screen

Pros: Honestly the best laptop I've ever owned. Incredibly small and lightweight. Battery can go a solid 10-12 hours easily. I'm keeping it until I decide if the Surface Book is for me or not.
Cons: If you get the touch screen, your battery life is crushed

Who should own it: People who don't want a touch screen, need absolutely the lightest thing possible, and already carry a separate tablet or large phone

- HP Spectre x360 - i5/256/8gb RAM

Pros: Amazing design; ability to use pen; people always ask you want machine is that; SD card sticks all the way in the machine
Cons: Battery life is not as good as XPS 13

Who should own it: People who like a touch screen and pen, but will only be using the x360 mode on a desk or less than 10% of the time (It gets heavy). Can get a bit hot

- Surface Pro 4 - i5/256/8gb RAM

Pros: Best productivity tablet out there
Cons: Battery life is poor; "lapability" is very difficult, especically if you are a person who sits with your legs crossed

Honestly the Surface Book is an amazing machine. While it is a Gen 1 product, it is probably the best Gen 1 product that you could possibly get. Keep in mind that Microsoft has had 4 generations of Surface Pros and the Surface Book is essentially just a Surface Pro 4 with a standard keyboard - hence, it is really a Gen 4b product.

Thoughts about Surface Book so far:

Pros: Screen is gorgeous; keyboard is solid; best trackpad out of all three above (Macbook Pro like)
Cons: Heavier and bulkier than XPS 13; screen can bounce a bit if typing hard on an uneven surface; about 9 hours battery life so far via productivity

Check out www.mobiletechreview.com if you want some really honest reviews of things.

For now, I am back to exploring my Surface Book Smilie
