Some use capacitors, though I believe that most solar watches now use a lithium battery for greater power reserve. Even the ones equipped with batteries will last a long time without replacement as long as you keep it charged properly (dropping the voltage below about 67% capacity will dramatically decrease the lifespan of a lithium rechargeable cell). Also, despite being an extreme example, the Grand Seiko spring drive uses no electrical power storage component at all and is still technically a quartz watch.


FWIW I'm in the same boat...I would be hard pressed to purchase another primary battery powered watch of any kind. It'll be mostly autos for me henceforward...with a few Eco-Drive & Kinetic for accuracy/simplicity/complications.
