So what improvements do the 4 have over this?

Phantom 4 has obstacle avoidance sensors on the front which will save your drone. For example if you LOSE contact with your drone (as many folks do) and the drone goes to "go home mode". Well without the avoidance sensors of the the 4 the older model 3 can easily smash into a hill or treetops on the way back home. The avoidance sensors of the 4 "sees" obstacles without contact to your app. That alone is worth the upgrade. Check out the Digital Rev review of the Phantom 4 which highlights this point extremely well;

However - the 4 is also about $600 more.

REcap of differences here but longer battery time; longer range and sport mode which makes the drone fly almost 50mph vs 35mph:

Hmmm at almost twice the price, If i break the 1st one due to crashing, I can buy a spare.

I have a P3 Pro and don't feel that the 4 is worth an upgrade. I will be waiting to see if the 5 has collision sensors on all sides (not just the front). The point made above about the quad going into return-to-home mode is a reasonable one, however RTH mode also causes the quad to ascend to a target altitude before flying home. If there are obstacles above the quad when this occurs, the sensors will not protect it and you will still crash.

Sensors on all sides? THAT will be a worthy upgrade. Nice price on this P3P though...paid $1300 for mine at launch.

I doubt that it will go that low for new until a newer model 5 comes out due to the problems with battery life and range on the 4. The 3 is a solid machine unlike the 2s before it and will not hit that low. However, watch B&H used section as you can regularly score better deals than this. I got a 3 Pro right when the 4 came out for 650. The price has gone back up since then and there haven't been many used ones available (I think a lot more 3 Pro users have held onto theirs when hearing about the problems with the 4)

As someone who owns both P3A and P4. I never had any issue with the P4 battery or range. The P4 battery runs for 20min and the craft reaches 2 miles easily, like the P3A. If you follow the Phantom forums, you will see arguments from both sides.
I find that I fly the P4 more than P3A simply because it is more stable under windy condition and it has a host of advanced features that make the craft a better flying camera. The P4 sport mode is a game changer. If you have FPV goggles, it is like SW podracing!

.I think also, it doesn't take long to setup and fly the 4 than the 3. It takes me 5 mins to have it up in the air while the 3 maybe 10 minutes pre-checks!!
