Looking to finally decom by HP Touchpad as it is a bit slow these days. Opinions on the best Android tablet (10 inch or larger) for under $300?

New tablet models don't come to market as fast as phones. Some care is needed to avoid buying a new 3 year old tablet, you have to watch product life cycles closely. The screen quality on many the cheaper ones leaves a lot to be desired.

The pixel-c might be the only 10" that runs marshmallow.

Samsung, Lenovo, Nexus 9, and Fire HD/HDX are probably your best, but most models are 2+ years old

All true.

As for the pixel C, it costs $400+ so it is more than I am willing to spend on a toy and is a Google product, which I want no part of. Bad enough I have to tolerate Android and whatever garbage they have tracking my every keystroke in the OS in order to sell me junk, but I am not buying a Google built spyware device lol.

I don't think a nexus device or the pixel c are any worse than all the other android devices out there. The chromebook, is probably worse. You generally have a lot of settings you chage that improve your privacy a lot. Your smart tv and stb like roku are actually pretty bad in this regard, among other things they are used to help respawn persistent cookies on your devices. I reset the advertising id on all my devices on the first of the month.

The Nexus devices generally enjoy good cyanogenmod support, so you can put other software on them that respects your privacy more.

Maybe, maybe not. Any hardware built by Google which has an OS by Google I have no confidence in anything they tell me security-wise. They can do whatever they want under the hood and who is to say otherwise? At least with Lenovo or Samsung, they have no direct vested interest in playing games like that whereas Google makes its money directly from it. Of course with the OS they can pretty much do whatever they want anyway, but I much rather take my chances with non-goolge hardware from Samsung, Lenovo, etc.

I am hoping we get a new one this year at the developers conference but not counting on it. I want something a tad larger to replace my Nexus 7 2013.

Yeah that was kind of my point. A lot of tablets are long in the tooth, but there aren't that many new models out yet.

Better deals / options likely between back to school and Christmas.

An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
