Definitely a very good price for this tent, so thanks, TU and repped.

Recommend you put the price in the title just to ward the sticklers for SD posting etiquette.

For future posts, it is helpful to post the price in the title so folks can decide if they want more info or not.

Wow, great price on the tent for $80. Did you see the actual price at checkout? Here's another Alps that is rated as a 3 person, but with a different shape and within a few ounces of weight. Shows $120. at Sierra Trading Post and then apply a 25% off coupon to get it to $103.96..sweet! This Alps Sirius is also avail on Amazon for $160. and assuming the $20. off applies, gets it to $140. Both tents look great, so pick your floor plan and get hiking.

Should I be getting one of these or a hammock setup? I've only backpacked with tents but my cousins have been going the hammock route and not sure if I want a new tent (the other was a hand-me-down) or a hammock?

Try a different browser? Who knows.

Regarding hammocks: although I've never used them for backpacking, their light weight is nice but the terrain where I backpack is often sparse and few trees (above timberline). In our Sierra's we have plenty of storms and that's when a good tent makes it a good nights sleep..and staying dry. My old standby 2 man tent is actually a Coleman that has withstood torrential rains and keeps me and my Border Collie completely dry. Weighs about 1.5 lbs more than a lightweight tent with DAC poles, but the upside is that fiberglass poles if broken will still support a tent vs snapping a aluminum pole that does not bend..just snaps..been there done that, but fixable if you have the tools with you. I'm old school and still using my Kelty Tioga external frame from the early 90's (and still sold today) and a GAZ backpacking stove from the 80's..excellent quality, made in France. My other external frame pack from the 70's is my Jansport D5 and made in USA..too many memories with it covering many sections of what is now called the PCT trail. Years go by, don't waste them!

This tent is about the cost of an Eno Double Nest with Straps. Hammocks are great in warm good weather. Tents are better for year round. I hammock when I know there will be cool setup spots and I know I won't freeze.

As for backpacking hammocks always have the weight savings, but there are good tents at really low weight too.

5.5 lb... Is that light enough for a backpacking tent?

Car camping. I would hate lugging that weight.

This is a great backpacking tent for the money. For more money (much more), you can get something lighter, but this will be durable and light enough for most campers.
