Thread Details

Didn't see this posted - Opera is now offering free VPN for iOS devices. In my tests the speeds through this VPN are superb (I get 45Mbps from my 50Mbps WiFi connection).

Download on App store [apple.com]

P.S. This is different from the VPN bundled with the desktop browser that they started offering a few weeks back in that all data - browser, apps, streaming, etc go through Opera's VPN.

I wonder why the TD.. this opera browser with the VPN is excellent so far- I plan to use the desktop version as well instead of having to go through a paid service. Thanks OP.

EDIT- alright since I posted this, there seems to be two posts ahead of me stating the operat browser as a "chinese hacking" vpn tool.

I remember using the opera browser back before chrome or firefox. I remember this because opera browser was the first browser I found that I could type a search parameter in the address bar to have it search right away. I used this over 10 years ago.

I would really like to see a source for the above "statement", as this browser has definitely been around for a while. Maybe it was indeed "bought" by a different company, in which case it will be a problem.

Opera plans to finalize an acquisition deal from Chinese companies and investors.

This is a great deal IMO.

For people voting down because they have Chinese investors on board - know that most large Chinese companies don't work any differently than large American/Global companies.

For others voting down due to concerns about Chinese govt. spying - read the news - you are probably being spied on more by the NSA than the Chinese govt.

Just my 2 cents.

maybe, although there is no one there even pushing back or asking about the hard questions about extent/use/necessity.

that whole dustup between FBI and Apple. never would have happened in China.
chinese gov't would ask huawei to crack the encryption on a phone, and they would say, just use the backdoor you asked us to build in last year.

No fuss no muss no news articles at all about how it all went down, just a celebration of the glorious state victory. "Investigators capture Tibetan terrorist ringleader!"

Define "free." Opera is known to track your browsing and advert to you in a way that can not be directly turned off...imagine what they could do with all of your data flowing through their servers. Giving them that information makes it far from "free," it just means you pay with your privacy. If yours is valueless, knock yourself out.

From http://www.operasoftware.com/ :"Find out how to integrate mobile advertising into your marketing plans via the mobile web, apps and Speed Dial entries. Understand and gain insight from the audience using the world's most popular cloud-assisted mobile web browser and the world's largest mobile advertising platform." (Emphasis mine.)

I'll pay for my VPN, thanks.
