Split toe shoe trees expand when the heel is pressed into the shoe allowing them to form fit the shoe better. Some shoes are narrow at the toe (oxfords) and others are broad (loafers). Shoe trees are not just for drying shoes but they also help to maintain the shape of the shoe as well.

Some people recommend split toe trees for lighter shoes. Boating shoes, athletic wear and hand sewn shoes for example. For bulkier, stiffer, or firmer shoes they recommend solid trees. I currently use Nordstrom split trees in my dress shoes and think they have performed well.

Another factor you'll want to consider is the material. Unfinished, raw, ceder is highly recommended. It not only absorbs moisture but it also deodorizes/helps to control the odor. The average human foot will sweat between 1/4 - 1/2 cup of sweat a day. If you get the proper size trees, use them when not wearing the shoes and rotate your shoes regularly your shoes will last much longer and look better to boot.
Split toes conform to the shoe's 'last' better than these. If you bought shoes with a fit that you particularly liked, these shoe trees may stretch it out more than a split toe would, changing the structure of the shoe.
may I ask why you recommend split toe over this?

These look exactly like the jos a bank ones, which are even cheaper. If youre going spend this much, at least get split toes.
