I could not disagree more. civ 3 and 4 were much better than 5 in my opinion.
Civ 3 had the cool mechanic of being able to culturally dominate your enemies. If your cities were strong cultural hubs, nearby cities would convert to your nation. That was my favorite!

However, late game combat became boring and cumbersome due to massive numbers of units, and micromanagement of those units.

Civ 4 is my favorite Civ game, with just the right balance of everything. I wish the "cultural takeover" were still possible, but at least the late game combat was fixed.

Civ 5 is fine. It lacks the amazing intro music (Baba Yetu) of Civ 4, which is enough for me to call it a downgrade. But I don't see any good reason to trash talk it. Granted, I've probably only finished 2 full games, whereas I've done dozens of games in Civ 3, and dozens upon dozens of games in Civ 4.

I do not think Civ 3 for $1 is a great deal because you can get this deal all the friggin' time. It comes packed with the other games all the friggin' time, too. Still, if you've been waiting for Civ 3 to go back to a dollar... it's there now, and it'll be there again in another month or so. Basically every steam sale, if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: Actually, checking the price history on a reputable site, it seems $1.24 is the normal discount. That surprises me, because I swear I've seen it down at $1 repeatedly.

This is a good game for a fair price. If you're just getting into Civ and have a decent computer, you'll probably have more fun getting CIV5 on sale.

If I'm not mistaken, the older Civ games present a completely different experience from 5?

I have to agree here. Being a Civ player since the original version (on a Macintosh in the early 90's), I felt Civ V is a fairly big departure in the feel of the game from the previous versions. I played IV quite a lot, but got V on a deal recently and just couldn't get into it. They changed around the style of play a lot and it just doesn't feel like the old versions. III and IV are where it's at.

That being said, good deal on a great game.

Civ3 brought the best ideas into the series: cultural borders and fight for resources. Civ4 is similar but much more polished and better balanced. Also more complex. Civ5 changed the game mechanics so much that I would consider it a different game.

If you want to spend your time with the best game experience, I would recommend Civ4.
