That's pretty good for the 8' Gearwall pieces. Thanks OP.

Some of the best prices I have seen for sure on a lot of items. I will probably return my glacier white shelves for these so they will match my 30" modular cabinet finish. Got them for $1 cheaper but an extra dollar to match is worth it to me.

With regard to the maple top, it seems you could get a high school kid to make you the same thing in wood shop for 1/3 the sale price and end up with something that fit better without the gaps I see in the product pics for this one. $100 or even $66 + tax seems ridiculous for what you get.

I'm not a woodworking expert and can't give that advice, unfortunately, but I've seen what my boys and their friends have done in their wood shop classes and this would be trivial by comparison. Generally speaking, you'd probably want a bunch of strips of maple about an inch thick that you could run through a planer. Glue and clamp them together, then plane (or sand) the whole thing again. Do a final trim to size, then round off the corners to eliminate sharp edges. Finish with something durable and you're good to go. Total cost would depend on what wood and equipment you already have available, obviously.

Another route - find a well loved butcher block (kitchen table or counter top) off craigslist, cut to size, belt sand/orbital sand from 40-60 grit to about 150-220 then rub on butcherblock oil if its for a kitchen, or polyurethane for most other applications.

Yet another route - check out the prices of the solid butcherblock sold by ikea, or your local speciality wood supply shop (IKEA is often times further away but with better prices). No maple, but there is birch and oak...

For both above routes - sell off your unwanted excess to another wood worker, or sell on craigslist as finished tops...

It really depends if you're going to use the hooks, shelves, or wall mount cabinets.

thanks andy, shelves is what I am thinking. but open to best practices that offer scaling this to a garage wide system.. Also looking at $36 kit that comes with single gear track and hooks and can integrate in the grand scheme of things.
