What are good options in the Venue 11 pro realm?

Devedander 8,844 826 May 12, 2016 at 10:33 AM
I have used a Venue 11 Pro (atom) for a few years now and something is wrong where the keyboard connector is just unreliable now. I think it's actually with the tablet portion and not software related so I am looking to replace with a new unit.

I already have the battery keyboard for the Venue 11 pro so was considering just buying another venue 11 pro so I can keep using the keyboard, but before I go buying replacement really old technology I thought I would see if someone has suggestions that are better.

I am fine with atom based performance and looking for a good looking 10-11 inch screen of at least 1080p with good battery life. Needs to have a good keyboard and trackpad.

The tablet/2in1 factor really isn't a big issue for me, I like the option but I honestly went tablet mode less than a dozen times in the last few years so a small laptop is also fine, touchscreen is not a necessity either.

This isn't a huge rush, I have a chunky laptop that's covering for now so if a deal regularly comes up for something that's great I can wait a few weeks to see it comes up again.

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas!

Under $400, preferably around $200..

I can get another Venue 11 on ebay for about $120-150 so considerably more would be difficult to justify as the performance of the VP11 has been quite acceptable for me.

I'd be all over the Chinese windows tablets if they had a decent keyboard solution. The VP11 battery keyboard is a quality piece of work...

I would go with the Venue Pro 11 7140 since you already have the keyboard. Dell was just running 50% off refurbs so you could have snagged one for under $250.

The 7140 is pretty awesome. The Core M processor is basically up there in terms of power with the Surface Pro 3. I prefer it even more since the Venue doesn't have those fans that annoy me.

Aside from that I would suggest you grab a 2-1. There are several out there in your price range. I think that the Core M Asus Transformer isn't a total pile of crap if you want to give that a shot.

Thanks that looks like a good bet and I would have definitely scooped one up at $250! I looked during the sale and the only Venue I saw were Android ones Frown

I should have specified my venue is a 5130 which I think is slightly different so might preclude the keyboard working with that one?

So I see some re certified hitting at that price again but they are the M-5Y70c the M-5Y71 model is about $60 more, any input on whether that's considered generally worth while?

I have a 5y71 and I like it very much. It is surprisingly powerful for a tablet. I just find that I go for the laptop more often.

Benchmarks between those processors show that they are nearly the same thing. Only difference is that the boost/turbo on the 71 is a bit higher. In the end, it will only go so long and so high before it starts throttling due to heat anyway.

The c will likely be able to sustain the turbo longer while the 71 will spike up and down. Not sure on real world differences. I have not watched mine to see how it handles heat. I recall the Venue Pro 8 having massive issues with this. I have a feeling that the passive cooling block is simply better thought out in the core m models.

All I can say is that mine is the 8 gb ram 256 gb SDD option and it is capable of playing Lords of the Fallen, Dying Light, Pillars of Eternity and several surprising recent games on low settings.

Nice... I ended up getting both models, a S&D 71 for $304 that hopefully will be in pretty good condition and a c for $264. If the 71 is not to scratched or dented I will keep it and give the c to a family member who needs a new laptop and if not it goes back and I keep the c.

It seems the 71 has a 3x faster GPU, and while I don't really game much anymore, it would be nice to be able to play a few of the nicer games once in a while (wonder if it's asking too much to run cities skylines on it)

I will see how the work side by side in real world performance first. I have heard that lots of people limit the core speed to about 70% max to avoid heat issues as the result is constant speed rather than intermittent heat limited bursts.
