DM does not auto-renew unless you sign up for their DiscountLock program.

* Uncheck the box for the DiscountLock Program during Checkout.
* If you do sign up for it, and want to cancel it, you can do so at any time via your acct at the DM website.

Info on DiscountLock from DM Website

We do not do forced automatic renewals. For those who do not want to miss any issues, and wish to lock in the discount they got, we offer DiscountLock. If you are enrolled in DiscountLock, we will automatically renew your subscription at that the same discounted price, if available, before the end of your ordered term. This means you won’t have to worry about paying a higher price when at time of renewal and you won't have any disruption in your subscription service.

If you use PayPal for your purchase, DM (like some other vendors), will add an authorization on your account for recurring payments (although if you do not sign up for the DiscountLock program, DM will not auto-renew).

Some folks may wish to remove this from their PayPal account.

Signed up for another year and was given the option to get a 2nd year for that same discounted price. Does anyone remember how to check your subscription time? I have a feeling I'm going to bee getting these mags well after I'm dead.

Backpacker is mostly ads and product pushing but occasionally they have some good articles and great pictures. I've had my subscription for about 3 years and at 5.00 I'd say it's worth it.

I have written for them before. It's mostly fluff, but it does keep you in the backpacking mood if that's your thing.

Subscribed to and enjoyed Backpacker for years. Noticed about two years ago that Backpacker started to get a little too frequent and dogmatic with their "progressive" political messaging. Wrote a letter to the editor and asked him to terminate my subscription immediately. Even at $5 a year, no new world order propaganda is with my phony money.

The first two numbers are the year (21 = 2021) and the second two numbers are the month (03 = March).

Your subscription expires w the Mar 2021 Issue.

I want to be excited about a subscription to Backpacker but i'm tired of magazines turning into a monthly stack of thinly veiled gear advertisements. I wish there were magazines that cost more but weren't just 95% advertisements (both overt/obvious and subtle).

I agree 100%. I find that the content in BP is pretty good. I don't know if you can always get away from reviews that are really ads and the same content in every issue but BP does a pretty good job. I wish their articles would give more educated information or more technical information though. There certainly is an amount of "fluff" to it.

Despite the fluff and ad content would you still recommend a subscription at $5? Been away from backpacking for about 18 months and looking to reinvigorate myself. Was excited at a $5 sub to BP but the ad and fluff talk took the wind out of my sails. I don't really want to pay $5 for a year of advertisements telling me my old gear won't cut it anymore...
