Could you please clarify this statement? Most home users don't need to know anything about routing protocols as they will likely only have one router. Home users don't need to know anything about switching technology as these are not managed switches. A typical use for a small switch like these would be extending your wired network to your TV stand which might have a Smart TV, PS4 / XBOX / Blu Ray Player / Etc. All these devices could be connected and only require only one cat to be run back to your home router which will likely have a built in switch. Then your home router performs NAT translation or technically PAT translation to allow all your streaming desires to come to fruition. Again I don't see how your ISP providing with you one IP is even relevant to this switch. Maybe a user wants to connect a few computers together without the internet at all just to transfer some files.

Thanks for pointing this out.

I'm going to be building a second slave computer for my audio work and I've just been getting by with a crossover cable plugged directly into the two computers, so it looks like I'll be grabbing this!

Yeah, I guess I do. I also have Newegg Premier, so one of those might be reducing the price a bit.

I am having my home wired with cat6 to all rooms so that I can hardwire the smart tvs rather then bog down my wifi. Is this what I would need at my router to expand the ports?

If you are having all of your rooms wired you may need a larger one with 16 or 24 ports. It would be more ideal than daisy chaining several of these together.
