Lol now I have Denon X3200w and Yamaha TSR-5790 from Costco debating to return. And now this one. Decisions decisions. For this price this is great.

I bought the Denon AVR-S710W for $277 earlier this week and haven't opened it yet. I just spent 30 minutes on Google trying to read reviews and compare it to the Onkyo TX-NR646. It's a really tough choice.

The NR646 which has 2 HDMI outputs (are the both simultaneously active like having a HDMI splitter built-in?) and 8 HDMI inputs (3 of which are HDCP 2.2) vs. 1 output and 6 inputs (6 of which are HDCP 2.2) on the S710W. The NR646 has a ton of analog inputs and the S710W only a couple, but lack of inputs can be remedied by switchboxes.

I found 1 reviewer who said the TX-NR646 sounds "slightly" better than the Denon AVR-S710W, but most reviews don't even mention sound quality. They seem to concentrate on features. Am I missing any other key differences?

Should I swap the Denon which I haven't opened yet and get this Onkyo instead?

Funny, was just looking at Meh's deal of the day, older NR545 model for $20 less.
Must be Onkyo Day, or something.

The thing is that receivers come and go with new technology every month. I can only do 5.2 system in my room and DTS X and Atmos along with 4K are not relevant for me given its use on projector. People will say future proof and stuff. I say go for what fits in your budget now along with quality for few years. Receivers are one of those things that will die at some point in time or be flaky. Just don't know why.

I did a lot of research and most people agree with Yamaha on quality of receiver. The part that people miss with discussing receivers is the speakers. I have Harman Kardon HKTS 16 and for the price I got, I could use for couple of years and wait for deal on Energy or Klipsch. There is so much around to debate on, but for me price is a good determination factor than future proofing. But that's just me.

Long story short it's splitting hairs between receivers unless you miss something desperately. So keep the Denon unless you have a reason to upgrade.

I would also like a pro/con on these two. I have a Sony DH-540 currently and am trying to decide if I need to upgrade or not. AccuEQ vs DCAC would be appreciated as well.

Thanks I need a replacement, my Marantz SR5008 receiver is fine but after few minutes watching a movie, CRACKLING sound comes on all speakers and does not stop. I don't have a receipt and Marantz/Denon doesn't repair without a receipt, I might dump in ebay.

My Denon's headphones jack keep switching on and off, which cuts the sound. this might be solution to the problem.

For $20? 646 of course. Even if just for the phono input.
