I am scheduled to participate in a study that I received a call about the other day from Probe Market Research. This study was posted on their Facebook page. They sent me an email today requesting my Amazon customer ID for "verification purposes". They want me to go to my account, go to my profile page and copy down the letters and numbers that come after my profile in the URL. At the bottom of the email it states:

"This is common practice to verify the account for the study."

I have been doing market research studies for years and have never, ever been asked this. Of course, my spidey senses are tingling. I don't want to give out this information because I fear that it can be used to access my account in some way.

My question to you guys is has a company ever asked for this information from you? Did you give it out? And most importantly, what information could they get from having my profile?

Thanks so much to everyone for your help!

I just followed the information you provided i had login into my Amazon account to test.
I went to my amazon profile and then proceeded to copy and paste letters on another browser.

The only thing basically that pops up is my amazon username and reviews i have written.
I pretty sure it's safe since they can't login into your account.
Example: it's like you clicking on my Slickdeals username you can see at all my post i written.

Are you supposed to write a product review? If so,
it would make sense all they doing is using your amazon profile to identify you as the one who wrote the review on the product.

Amazon Profile Example [amazon.com]: I randomly picked a Amazon public profile
As you can see all you see is Reviews only.

Thank you that is very helpful. What you did was awesome and above and beyond! I have been playing around with it a bit as well. I am supposed to be doing a study that will focus on Amazon Prime and it is supposed to show that I actually subscribe to Prime. I did a screenshot of the top of my Amazon page where is says that I have prime and has my name and sent that to them. I haven't heard anything back from them yet. I guess I am just super paranoid. I am just so very careful about the information that I hand over to people online. I have never had anyone ask me for anything like that and I was just worried since they have my Amazon email address and would also be getting my profile ID.

No Problem, I would have been paranoid too .Wink
But since they only asking for your Amazon profile id, you should be ok.

theyll be a pain in the ass to get your payment, after the pretend to send the first payment, and it doesn't show up just make sure to harass them. I've been in 3 studies and it happens everytime to me and other people I know.

Ugghh, that's not good to hear. They haven't bothered to get back to me or send me a link to the study that they were already supposed to send so none of it really sounds like it is going to pan out. Oh well, it may be best if I don't hear back from them based upon what you are telling me.

They eventually pay, so far, but like Murray Hill, you spend SO much time and days beating them for a few hundred bucks max. Murray hill has straight up ignored about 20 emails for a project I put so much time and effort into
