Bands?

CDMA/EVDO: 0, 1
EDGE: 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz
HSPA+: 850MHZ, 1700+2100MHz (AWS), 1900MHz
LTE: Bands 2, 4, 5, 13

Verizon model (XT1528) bands missing compared to ATT GoPhone model:
for AT&T (missing 4G LTE band 17)
for T-Mobile (missing 4G LTE band 12)

SIM Unlocked?
Yes. To use on GSM operators like AT&T and T-Mobile, you can either enter a handful of ADB commands (here [xda-developers.com]), or play settings musical chairs via the "Network" app you can download from the Play store (here [xda-developers.com]).

Verizon Postpaid Usage?
As of January 17th, in order to use Verizon Prepaid devices on postpaid, you must activate it on prepaid and pay the first month's payment ($30). If you swap in your postpaid SIM prior to making a payment, your postpaid account will become HOTLINED, which disables your phone service until you contact customer service to remove it (putting your postpaid SIM back in its original phone will not remove hotlining).
If you know someone who has Verizon Prepaid service, you can avoid the first month payment fee by swapping in their prepaid SIM into this phone for a bit, maybe make a test call/text, and then swap your SIM in.

Root and Unlockable Bootloader?
No and no. The AT&T/GoPhone/Cricket-branded XT1527 and the Verizon XT1528 do not qualify for the Motorola Bootloader Unlock website. All other variants do. The only way to get root is by flashing via TWRP recovery, and the only way to flash TWRP recovery is by unlocking the bootloader.

Marshmallow?
Motorola has stated that they will not be releasing the Marshmallow update to US variants. Since the bootloader is locked, there is no way to flash another variant's firmware or a custom ROM.

Bought one of these from the last deals and it absolutely does work on T-Mobile with a little bit of hacking. it's not that hard just search for it. there's a thread on XDA on how to do it.

just a warning verizon has a new policy that doesnt make it as easy to use on postpaid. used to be as simple as just activate it and its done.

No. Traditionally Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, not GSM. T-Mobile + ATT&T are your GSM technology users. They are somewhat converging now with 4G data and voice... but you still have different bands and it becomes a problem moving networks or even traveling globally.

Thanks. What about iPhones or Nexus devices?

You have to research each model. For example, on the Nexus 6 there is a "world" version and a USA version. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_6#Variants

I've used my Verizon Galaxy S4 and Verizon LG G4 (neither prepaid) in Indonesia without issue by just swapping in a local sim card while there. Will this work equally well in Indonesia? I have a friend going and she is looking for a cheap Android phone for her trip. Not sure if what I'm talking about is "world phone" or "unlocked" or what but like I said, my Verizon locked post paid phones worked fine.
