Laptop for mom suggestions?

Thefaintx 14 18 May 15, 2016 at 03:09 AM
I'm looking to get a laptop for my mom. I really have no idea where I should go beyond a few needs.

Has to be a 2-in-1.
Has to be 15 inch.
Must have a good media experience--good screen and sound, ideally, but screen is more important.

I prefer something that is known for reliability. She won't be doing anything other than email, web browsing, watching Netflix, etc. with it. I want it to be able to last her for a good long while. A specific brand doesn't matter.

And I'm willing to spend as much as 1,300ish if need be.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've been looking around, but it's hard to trust reviews on the sites I'm used to (Amazon...) and I'm sure I'm not seeing a bunch.

Is she older? If she's like 60 or older I would just say get her an iPad. My mom is 70 and laptops intimidate her, but she absolutely loves the iPad I gave her a few years ago. It's way more intuitive for most people.

I am not sure why you chose the options you did most 2 in 1s are not 15", and the hinges are usually a weak point an ipad with a keyboard case or windows tablet with a keyboard would make more sense but are not 15"

I she going to use it just in the house or take it with her?

Please provide more information on how she will use laptop and what kind of phone she has, if she has an iPhone an Ipad would make the most sense.

My MIL has an iPad and she struggles with the keyboard and the odd way it can be hidden or stuck so a case with a BT keyboard to me makes the most sense.

Why a 2 in 1?

Vague questions receive vague answers . . . . . .

if you want good sound out of a laptop plug in external speakers or push it wirelessly with a chromecast audio or networked AVR.

Don't trust reviews on amazon, you can use fakespot but still. Trust reviews from professional reviewers on sites like pc world, maximum pc, cnet, and even consumer reports (they don't have the best track record with tech).

2 in 1's don't go to 15". Why do you think she needs a 15"?

You're probably better off buying a less expensive laptop AND tablet than a 2 in 1. However, I'd start with just one.

For the uses you described, I'd look at an Acer 15" 1080 Chromebook. Drove down the Windows road with my elderly parents for way to long before I wised up and grabbed them a Chromer. Those who have tried to keep a Windows machine running smoothly for their parents will know exactly where I'm coming from.

Bought my 80 year old grandfather a 15" chromebook and other then printing support it sounds perfect for what your describing for your mother. I had had little to no "support requests" with it.

Basically it all depend on your mother choice , What your mother want to do with the laptop , is she technical or just watch some movies, editing files etc

This popped up today: Lenovo Flex 3 2-in-1 Convertible laptop Intel Core i5-6200U (2.30 GHz) 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 10 Home $500 FS neweggflash
May be a bit of an overkill, but at least you know it should fit her needs and beyond for several yrs.

My sister replaced our 85-year old mother's Windows desktop with an iPad. Mom's happy.

The one issue with an ipad for someone not very tech savvy is that it's harder to provide remote support. About all you can do is facetime with a mirror...
