I just ordered a mixer itself from Hayneedle deal couple days ago and almost pulled the trigger on this attachment, but then I saw this review [amazon.com] and changed my mind for now, at least before someone here at SD shares his/her experience... Pics with metal pieces in the ground meat look scary there...

Do you think it's BS? Seems like almost 100 people "liked" that review there...

That is due to the seal that is behind the drive assembly being bad, the grey goo is the lubricant for the motor passing through the seal and into the meat mixture. Not a fault of the attachment, but is actually due to a mixer that is in need of service...that person was probably using a very old mixer.

Just curious, could you make baby food with this?

Thanks! Been borrowing my brother's when needed and will now have my own. I think these work great. I mostly use to grind chicken for dietary needs or when making lean ground sausage. Have found that the higher strength mixers do much better, like the 600. Doesn't bog down and will breeze through the meat. The lower power ones still work fine, but you'll need to push the meat (no pun intended) a little slower through the downshoot to avoid straining the motor. Won't even notice w the 600 though.

I use this to grind chicken and beef. I double grind, using the larger extrusion hole plate first, then regrind with the smaller one while adding spices in for a perfect size. I have been using mine for over 5 years with no problems on my 600 with 575 watt mixer. I wash the internals by hand first before throwing in the dishwasher as they get pretty sticky and the dishwasher tends to bake on any left over meat.

At this price, it's a good deal for what it is, but they're not really very useful as "all-purpose" grinders, just for light-duty usage like the small batches of ground meat people have mentioned here. For heavier duty needs, you're much better off with a more powerful, dedicated (and unfortunately more expensive) standalone grinder...

On another note, there's also an option to get it with the sausage stuffer attachments for just a few bucks more or, and if you live in a state where Amazon has to collect sales tax, it might well work out to just about the same total as the one without them. Amazon "fulfills" this second option, too, so you returns would be through them, if necessary, and Prime shipping is also available, but since Amazon isn't technically "the seller", sales tax collection is different (and in my case, for example, this seller doesn't collect NY sales tax, while Amazon does...)

Just use your food processor or blender.

Good price. I only have used the attachment for meat. I had a grey goo problem too. My mixer I have is a Kenmore, brand new. The KitchenAid attachments work on this unit. I grind up my own pork and chicken. Every now and then I get the grey goo but just catch and toss aside. Works well, just take your time. One word of caution, use the plunger thingy they give you. I used a wooden spoon which got sucked in and broke.
