Can a refurbished HDD be trusted?
ek9cv5 18
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner. Way to reference an incident that happened to one particular line of drives 15 freakin' years ago! Not to mention, that was back when IBM owned this HDD business. Hitachi has owned the business since 2006 and has been extremely reliable.

On top of that, 3.6 TB are nowhere near mainstream. A quick search online shows that you're going to be paying ~$4,000 for an SDD that size. Hell, 1 TB SSD are just starting to become common place and it's still an enthusiast product. Most consumer desktops/laptops still come with mechanical storage.
Chances are that these are working pulls from a data center that's had a scheduled upgrade. The Ultrastars are much more reliable that Seagate's consumer drives. If you jump on this deal, you can check the power on time when you receive them.

I've had refurb SSD's and HD's and never had a problem with them.

for the cost... only way id trust it is in a raid 1 or 5 depending how many you buy. Basically i need some way of getting my data back... Then again you could pop one in a external enclosure for archive type things.. ( low use )

I think these are the same drives that being sold as "bulk oem" drives on goharddrives. I never had any problems with those. But regularly backing up your data is a good practice, regardless of the drives being new or not.

You couldn't PAY ME $35 to take a Refurb Hitachi Deathstar. On principle you should be fine with a refurb HDD since the mechanical portion can fail like a motor giving out etc but there is a reason that Hitachi and Toshibas have so many refurbs to begin with. If you need cheap JBOD or something then go ahead but don't trust these for sure. With 3.6TB SSDs going mainstream I'm waiting for some sweet deals for a JBOD Parity Storage Space Plex Server.
