Does anyone know any ways to waive drop fees when dropping off a rental car to a different location? Or at least any good coupons to save a good chunk of money. A $200 a week rental comes out to $800!!! Thank you!!!

Where are you picking up and dropping off? That makes a difference. No car rental company is going to let you pick up in a popular tourist or busy business area and let you drop off in the middle of nowhere without a fee.

Have you tried different rental car companies? Search out your cities on Travelocity or Kayak or whatever travel booker you use. They will search multiple companies and give you the different prices. Then you can search further on your own or book with them. Just make sure you are comfortable with their terms and conditions. We've done very well with AAA and Hertz. Having a Hertz#1 Gold through AAA helps, too.

Are you able to reverse the order of the cities you visit? I remember looking at a one way car rental a few years ago that had a drop off fee in one direction and not the other. As we had just started pricing out an itinerary and seeing if it fit in our budget, it was easy to change the direction of our travel.

The only way (I know) to waive the one-way drop off fee is by using the exclusive one-way rental deals that come out when rental car companies re-position their fleet. Unfortunately, at this time all of the exclusive one-way promos require you to begin your rental in Florida. See Dollar One-Way Deal [dollar.com] and Avis One-Way Deal [avis.com] and Hertz One-Way Deal [hertz.com].

Since these don't apply, you'll have to pay the drop-off fee and I know that sucks. You can save a little by using discount and coupon codes, but don't expect a 50% discount, primarily because discount codes don't affect the drop-off fee, just the base rate.

I'd recommend Zalyn [zalyn.com] for discounts. Sign-up for an account and select all the discount types that apply to you. Be sure to select all of the airline reward programs, even if you're not a member. If you have AAA or Costco, select that as well. You'll be able to try out different discount codes & compare if the AAA discount at Hertz is better than the Costco discount at Enterprise or the Advantage discount at Alamo.

I have found the best rental rates through my Thank You Rewards connected to my credit card. Do you have anything similar? or through Costco or Sams Club.

I was just on the costco site and plugged in ATL with a drop off at JFK for a week in june randomly selected and it came up to $500 for Avis.
I then got a little creative and selected a 1 day rental with the pick up in ATL and drop of at JFK and a 1 day rental is $125. Soooo, you could rent 6 days for about $225 and then 1 day for $125. That's a much better deal.

I'm a little confused by that. I tried it and I still got $500

You would make 1 reservation for the days you are in Atlanta, return that rental and then pick up a new rental and drive to jfk.

The key is to separate the days you are going to be in ATL vs the travel days to JFK.

I need a rental car the week of June 10th from Orlando...tried Zalyn, and it was quite high for me. Wasn't any better with the rewards from my cc. Any good deals or discounts that you know? TIA

Costco has the best rates I have found. The rates do fluctuate quite a bit from day to day. I recently booked in Orlando over Easter week and the rates were very high when I started looking. Eventually they dropped for about a week to less than 1/2 of the price. A $500 a week rental dropped to $210 then it went back up over $300.

@lorianna - here's what I found for your rental

1. $168 for a Midsize car with Economy Car Rental (no coupon)
2. $205 for a Midsize car with Fox (with a 10% off coupon)
3. $254 for a Midsize car with Dollar (with the BJs discount, if you're a member)
4. $266 for a Midsize car with Sixt (with a 5% off coupon)
5. $267 for a Midsize car with Alamo (with the Amex cardholder discount)
6. $269 for a Midsize SUV with Hertz (with the USAA discount, if you're a member)
7. $277 for a Midsize car with Budget (with the Costco discount, if you're a member)
8. $280 for a Midsize SUV with Hertz (with the AAA discount, if you're a member)

I'm not sure what all affinity discounts (AAA, USAA, etc) apply to you, but you can select these when you create an account on Zalyn. You'll only see coupons based on what your selections.

When you get to the search results, look for the coupons right under the rental vehicle. When you click on a coupon, it'll send your rental info and discount code to Priceline (sometimes to another website) where you'll be able to see the final discounted rate. You'll have to try out a few coupons to find what you're looking for.
