Please updated your title and description to "LUMP charcoal". Big difference between that and the usual briquettes most people use.

I only use lump charcoal. This specific listing is good for steaks, hamburgers, brats, veggies, etc. Burns hotter than Hades and lasts longer than briquettes. You'll need to a "chimney" stack to start it.

I buy the Menards Royal Oak lump. It's in a different color bag, but the same product. I've found the Menards green/mustard yellow bags have been consistently BETTER product than the red bags.

Charcoal essentially has an indefinite self-life as long as the product is stored in a cool, dry place

Great deal. I prefer Kingsford when quick grilling for the masses. But lump is a lot better for just about every other cooking method. And $0.51 per pound is slick these days. I'm lucky to buy at $0.80.

Is Menards selling Big Green Egg branded charcoal? I find BGE brand is a better grade, but the red bag seems to be the same stuff with the size distribution on the smaller end

The company that makes bge lump, makes this as well. From what I've read, it's the same stuff, the bge brand gets larger pieces. IMO, I've used both and royal oak seems to carry the same size pieces as bge.

Menards is not selling the BGE branded charcoal because they aren't selling the BGE kamado. Yes, BGE lump is far superior to most lump out there. The price is definitely higher. But their lump charcoal wood is denser, which lasts a long long time. So I guess in the end it evens out or could be a better deal for slow cooking/smoking. BGE has to make a better grade lump because their name and expensive kamados requires a superior product. I keep a BGE bag on hand for slow cooking lamb leg. My own experience with the Royal Oak Red bags has been smaller pieces, lighter. BGE has been bigger heavier lumps. But nothing is consistent. I've gotten bad bags of BGE in the past.

I will never ever ever use Cowboy lump again. Made in Mexico. Full of red rock stones, plastic, recycled wood planks/pallets, very few usable fist and larger sizes in the bag, way too much settled dust, chemical taste. I bought a full pallet during a fire sale. Ended up selling most of it on craigslist.

The newest player of lump is Jealous Devil [jealousdevil.com]. I have yet to try it. They claim to use the densest sustainable lump from Paraguay. Startup companies will go to Reddit and ask users to help them adjust their websites. That's what these guys did. So things may change around often and deals may pop up randomly. I look forward to giving them a try with more expensive meats.

Are you sure? The Walmart near me only had the Instant Charcoal Briquets at that price, not the natural hardwood lump.
