I'd assume it might be a bit quiet but then again I'm not headphone freak. mine are 150 and suck without an amp, always thought 40ish ohm was good for non amp listening. I could be totally wrong and talking out of my ass though!

these do require an amp to sound to their true potential

i had them for a week, I am a fan of a Sennheiser but I was a little disappointed in sound quality cause they were bass heavy and I don't listen to rap/hip hop at all. The built quality is solid and love how they fold inside. If you like bass then you will love them.

hi
these are dj headphones, so they are not optimized for best sound as would say hd650, they are designed to be robust, offer great noise cancellation and swivel cups to assist the dj's.

btw, price dropped by $5 just now

I have these. Super nice passive noise isolation and very comfy. I bought with a combo deal and basically got it for a similar price. I would recommend these. Also you do not need an amp to power these. They sound better with one but get plenty loud without it.

Q: "Are they better than hd 598 in terms of sound quality?"
A: That's an interesting question, but here is the deal. If you plug the HD 598 into a phone or ipod, then you will have a much louder and inflicting sound than the HD 7 DJ. The HD 598 does not need an amp and may in fact damage it if not correctly used. The HD 598 can reach extreme highs, but the HD 7 DJ can reach much lower frequencies and project it much better and focused than the HD 598. If you are looking for heavy bass and responsive "kicking" sound, get the HD 7 DJ, but if you want to have an easier response with less equipment for much lighter music, then go with the HD 598. They are both pretty well balanced in their respected areas.

Very helpful! Thank you for your comment. I will stick with my HD598.

I finally had to regrettably move away from Sennheiser cans due to their construction quality. I've had four pair now, and all have fallen apart in one way or another. For the HD 202s, which I still feel are a "best value" in headphones, it was the thin covering over the ear pads which started to flake off, exposing the foam. Black dandruff anyone? For the 598s I most recently bought, the plastic above the ear cups cracked on both sides so the headphones wouldn't stay on your head. I wrote a bitter complaint to Sennheiser about their poor construction. If you don't believe me, buy a pair for yourself and find out.
