After the last round with premium Scotts wood mulch fading in weeks (not months) and having mold in it we went with rubber mulch. Yes it costs a lot more up front but the benefits of no color fade, no bugs, no digging up the beds every 2-3 years with too much mulch build up is so worth it.

Also we are not all red when setting up the red mulch.

Whatever happened to decent mulch? This is pretty disappointing, since I'm looking at mulching a large area.

this mulch is decent

I have bought it 3 years in a row now....130-140 bags a year
I used one of the online codes and get it for about $1.70 to $1.80 per bag

Mine holds color and is consistent among the bags

My only gripe might be that it not as fine as the better quality mulch

However...when its on the ground you rarely notice

The quality may be regional
I live in the midwest and mine has always been well worth the price I paid for it

I purchased this mulch for the first time last month and I'm happy with it. Better than the mulch that I get from the local nursery.

See if there is a staker parsons in your area or any large wholesaler of gravel, top soil, etc. They will usually have mulch as well. I found that they also sell smaller quantities if u ask.

I am not sure anything happened to decent mulch. It is just that you are on Slickdeals, where we are discussing what might be the absolute least expensive mulch you can buy (when sale price and additional discounts are factored in). That is not necessarily a recipe for obtaining the most premium representation of a given product.

However, I figured I would add my 2 cents to this since this mulch gets almost universally panned. I have used it for the last 2-3 years and have been happy with it for the price. Is it the best mulch out there? Obviously not. However, with discount codes getting the price well below $2 per bag, it is less expensive than all of the bulk mulch around me (and MUCH easier to deal with). If you want a higher grade of mulch, I would expect to add approximately 50% to this price, if not more. The higher end bagged mulch and the nicer bulk mulch will cost you more.

I picked up 150 bags of this a month or so ago when it was last on sale for $2/bag and it all looks good again this year. Some of the pieces are larger than I would prefer, but it doesn't bother me.

It has done a pretty good job keeping it's color every year. I agree that maybe it is a regional thing, since I have had good luck with it. I am in the Midwest/South.

Scotts, lowes, HD, walmart brands - its all hit and miss. The best batch I have had for the last few years was 30 bags of Walmart generic brand mulch that I got last year. So you never know. I would recommend checking it out in person. If it looks crappy skip it and wait for the next deal. Don't take generic advice from someone who had a bad experience once upon a time.

As others have pointed out, expecting consistent high quality for $2 a bag is unrealistic. I use these deals to freshen up my beds on off years. About every 2 or 3 years I order some good stuff by the bucket load from a local supplier.

so every year you're purchasing new mulch? I's it because they wear/fade within the year you have it? it just because you need more?

another question Smilie ... what parts do you live in? meaning what kind of weather and how much Sun.

thanks in advance

yes..I am purchasing new mulch each year

its not fading really...but

I just like the look of fresh mulched beds

Think about nice commercial complexes that have fresh mulch and landscaping each year
I like that look...its just a personal deal for me
And at this price that Lowes has it I dont mind spending $250 /year on mulch to make my yard look fresh
I live in central Indiana....so its a mix of true 4 seasons
Typically the summers have a few days over 90 in July/August

There is also a fair amount of rain etc in the spring
