Most (but not all) microsd cards aren't fast enough for it to matter much.

What MicroSD card are you using? Most standard cards aren't going to read faster than USB 2.0 can handle. Do you know what read/write speeds you're getting with your existing setup on USB 2?

Maybe there is something funky with my computer:
Gigabyte mother board running Ubuntu 13.04. Writing to micro sd cards is slow and erratic. I am using a Kingston adapter. When I try to copy several GB the copy fails with some kind of i/o error.

Which card do you have? (Link please!) More likely its a problem with the card unless other USB 3 devices give you similar issues.
