Featured deals on Classic View

Why is the featured deals section intruding on the classic view? That's one of the top reasons I don't use the new view ever?

Its useless space, even if collapsed. Just unnecessary.

If you enabled the option to hide it, how is it using any space?

Well I had to do some digging to find how to do so, at first I thought it was just a +/- button.

Still, it's one of the most lambasted features from the redesign. Why bother making it intrude on the design people escape to to avoid seeing it in the first place.

I'll jump in here - been trying to hide it on my screen over a week and it won't go away! Clicking the preferences then unchecking the box and viola... nothing. refresh or reloading the tab does nothing and I'm logged in so it shouldn't be a cookie issue. I've really limited how much I come to SD over the past several years because of many reasons, including "innovations" like this.
any ideas on getting it to behave?

sorry to hear it's not sticking for you...is there any chance you missed the "save and close" button in the bottom right of the preferences section (see attached)?

I have also saved the preference to get rid of it and it returns after cookies are cleared. Please change this to save with my profile. It should not have to be reset after each running of ccleaner.

ok, now we're getting somewhere. I kept looking for some save or close and never saw one, infact I never saw half of the settings drop-down until now. The preferences drop-down stopped at the bottom of location for local deals and then were the listings on the front page. I just was able to see the remainder of the drop-down and the save&close button which seems to be working now. I had assumed it was an instant save to the user profile when I unchecked the box.

Thanks.
just FWIW, I'm running Chrome and do have adblock running, but nothing changed from then to now, just in case someone else has had a similar issue.

i think that's by design but as a moderator i don't have control over such things. the devs, etc do read here too, however. thanks for the suggestion!

Is it really by design to keep the preference in cookies. Each time I clear cookies I have to turn off the Featured Deals again.

This sounds like a bug...

Yes. If you clear your cookies, you are no longer logged in either.

Yes - But your settings are maintained on your profile when you clear cookies. Why didn't the developers put the featured deal setting on the profile that is saved to your server instead of storing in cookies.

Because users don't have to be logged in to use that feature. Thus it is stored in cookies like many other settings and features on slickdeals.

I use CookieCuller to keep some cookies around (the ones that keep me logged in) while clearing all others. It took me a few tries to realize that while most settings are stored in the profile, the Featured Deals setting is stored in its own cookie. This is asinine. Yes, I can save more than just the logon cookie, but I shouldn't have to do this every time you add a new preference -- all settings for logged in users should be stored with the profile, not in cookies. Do not make assumptions about your visitors' use of cookies.

I am also getting some new site design when I first load the homepage, and the old design when I refresh the homepage. Tell the devs to get it together.

To be honest, if you are clearing cookies without regard to what they do, that's not something we can control nor anticipate. You're deliberately breaking functionality and implementations we designed and are also selectively doing so. You do so at your own risk.

You're making an invalid assumption about the longevity and usefullness of cookies. They're not permanent, they don't span browsers or devices. If I'm checking SD on my three PCs, a tablet, and a phone, I shouldn't have to change my preferences on each device. You've created a completely unnecessary annoyance.

Site preferences should be tied to the user profile for logged in users.
