Thread Details

I was reading the other FiOS thread and got tired of people complaining that you have to pay per tv. I got FiOS installed a month ago and after complaining that I didn't get any promo deals (since I signed up with the people selling FiOS door-to-door), I finally got a CSR that was very helpful. She said if I called 1888-GO-DIGITAL (your phone will truncate the extras) and told them I suscribed to FiOS and wanted digital converter boxes (FiOS techs charge 2.99each/month when they install them for you), they would send me the boxes for free. I called and initially my account was too new, so I waited a few hours and the night after I got FiOS installed, I called again and was told I can receive up to 3 boxes for free. Apparently this has something to do with verizons efforts to work with the government for digital channel compliance by 2009 or whatever but i'm not complaining 2.99 x 2 tvs =5.98 per month saved... I searched and did not find a similar post so I thought I would help fellow SD'ers out. Please note this is not a standard definition box (5.99/month), but what is classified by FiOS as a digital converter box and is needed for each TV you want to watch FiOS tv on.

I won't thumbs down you, but this is ANCIENT news. I've had the 3 free boxes for months already along with thousands of other people. Most people with FIOS likely got two mailings even if you grabbed your limit of three immediately after receiving first mailing.

This digital converter box is meant for standard televisions that were directly hooked up to the FIOS cable without a set top box. It provides RF and RCA outputs. It does NOT provide a high definition output. Think of it as a standard definition set top box with absolutely minimal functionality. It comes with a remote.

engadget.com frequently provides updates as to where FIOS is being installed. Just do a search for FIOS. Seems like a bunch of areas every week. They also just got approved into NYC.

and yes, the picture is absolute amazing. The HD is uncompressed unlike comcrap and the others. Satellite also compresses.

I agree. This over use abbreviation garbage is for the birds. The OP can't be that lazy.
Oh come on, are you serious? People say 'DSL' all the time.

You probably want us to start calling cable, 'Cabe' next-- right? -_-

I'm probably getting rid of fios soon, their Internet & tv is pricing me out, plus not fast enough with adding hd channels is driving me crazy. They just added like 5 or 6 the other day after about a year since the last hd additions. Guess it's back to Cablevision for me. Frown btw, does any fios customers know how they ask for the equipment like dvr, router and these digital converter boxes back? Do they send someone out or do we bring it to them?

FiOS is the services name, that's not the OP's fault.

It's not laziness, its the assumption that people who care about the post (read: g33ks like me) will already know what FiOS is... get with the times dood Wink

With the free box you can get every channel on your plan you just don't have any guide information.
No i believe you will still only get the first 50 channels. You will need to rent a STB from verizon to get the encrypted channels 51 and higher

Lazy? No. Lazy is not taking the time to google FiOS.

I don't think that statement is true. Broadcast quality video is always compressed. The original network/station/operations facility that the programming originates from always compresses the signal to get it to the Verizon/cable/satellite companies' head ends (who then pass it along to you). If Verizon is claiming their video is uncompressed (which I haven't heard, but who knows...) then they only mean from them to you. But it certainly isn't uncompressed going into their facility.

And thanks for the heads up on the free boxes, even if it is old news!

Wrong, you just can't see any number on the channels. You type in on the keypad channel 616, you get it. Just no pop up information.

What's OP?
FWIW, IMHO, it's BS so YMMV. Wink

I can confirm this, I received a notice in the mail a few weeks ago to call Verizon to get your free digital converter box. I finally called on Monday, they said it would take 5-7 days to get here, the next day I come home from work and the converter's sitting at my front door. Works great, I get all the FiOS channels that I'm subscribed to, minus the info and guide features
