For general use this is probably fine. However, check on features that might be important for you and that may not be supported:

1. 24p playback with automatic switchover
2. Bitstream HD audio over HDMI to your reciver
3. 4k 60p support
4. Being able to play music at native sampling rate (44.1) without upsampling to 48kz
5. Proper 3D support

Also, look at spmc which is the fork of Kodi that is supposed to be giving these advanced features over time.

The guy may as well have complained it doesn't do his taxes or make him dinner lol.

Yeah, if you hard reset Kodi will erase. It's an app like any other. You can just reinstall it again though, no problem.

How does this compare spec-wise to an Amazon Fire TV Stick ($40) on which you can install Kodi?

I have a stick but not one of these. the stick has a slower dual core and less ram. I upgraded from the stick to the regular fire tv and it's noticeably better. I'd imagine a similar performance advantage with this item.

I say go with the FireStick over this one. They are both 1/8 memory wise, so equal on that very important spec. The most important thing of all is to have good internet in your home. Warranty and better support thru Amazon.

edited to add: I'm going to be upgrading soon to a box with 2/16 rom/ram. Ideally if you can afford it, go straight to that.

You might want to get a mini wireless keyboard if you want to do something besides Kodi.

Primary difference that I see is the HDMI port as 2.0 vs 1.4b. 2.0 is likely worth the additional $3.
