Depends. Conventional wisdom is tube is better. However, most people won't be able to drive tubes to where they really sound best. If you're going to be playing at bedroom levels, these amps can get you close to those sounds at any volume.

Plus tube maintenance is not for everyone and can electrocute or kill you if done wrong.

actually one of the selling point in this particular tube amp is the <1 watt setting, which is ideal for bedroom use (in theory). you get full tone at low volume. i was also considering the new marshall code in lieu of the peavey. man, my GAS will extend to amps soon. lol

Yeah, I've heard of various amps different settings, but I'm far from convinced that the attenuation in such low cost devices will really yield good tone..

I also am VERY interested in Code. Would like a 100Head and stack!

the prices on the code is crazy low if the amps are any good. the head and cab would be awesome setup.

I bought the 40w the last time it was on sale. I play a Bass VI and a couple cheap guitars through it. It is an excellent amp for the cost. Switching between bass and guitar amps in one product is perfect to save space and they both deliver. I'm still shocked at the sounds I'm able to get out of a Squier. The usb connection to a DAW is perfect. My only complaint was about the shipping. I'm not sure if it was Adorama or UPS, but the box arrived beat up and a corner protector piece was broken. I received it during a very busy time and never complained to Adorama about it. My fault, but honestly, for the quality and price I paid getting it new, I'm happy. I remember reading someone else had an issue with shipping, but got a price reduction. Happy shredding!

I think the Code50 for $250 would be perfect for general home use. Could probably gig with too. I haven't checked the specs, but it should be able to drive an external cabinet. It would be a shame if they left that functionality out. If I remember correctly, aside from wattage and speakers, all of the Code combo amps have the same features and effects. The online demos have sounded great, but I'll have to hear it in person first. Add another $80 or so if you want the foot switch.
