Looking for a gaming desktop for my son - appreciate any feedback on if this is a good deal for his needs:

Processor Processor: Intel Core 5th Generation i7-5820K Processor (6-cores, 15MB Cache, Overclocked up to 3.8 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Operating System Windows 8.1 (Free Upgrade to Windows 10 Home)
Hard Disk Drive 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s
Memory 8GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2133MHz
Media Bay 8X DVD +/- RW Drive
Video 4GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
Base Alienware Area 51-R2

$1,427.30

At about the same price point I can get more memory, same graphics card and SSD for fast boot-up, but never heard of "CyberPowerPC" before:

$1,549.99

Any recommendations from the gamer crowd here (other than build your own - I'm not doing that! Wink)

Thanks!

Those prices are too high. You can get something like this

http://slickdeals.net/f/8810487-hp-envy-750se-desktop-i7-6700-2tb-hdd-16gb-ddr4-6gb-gtx-980-ti-win-10-1135-free-shipping?v=1&src=SiteSearch

Just a little breakdown for you comparing the 2.

CPU: Your alienware has the better overall CPU but it's more expensive and isn't as good for gaming as the HP.

Ram: HP has double the Ram and both are at the same speed.

Hard Drive: Same size and speed for each

Graphics card: The HP GPU is a fair amount stronger and will give a clear noticeable performance gain over the alienware.

Operating System: The HP has the newer operating system, saving the time and effort to update.

The HP is a much better gaming machine than either of the ones you listed. With the money you save you can buy a SSD and with Windows 10 it would be a super easy upgrade. At that point it will still be cheaper, will be a better gaming machine and have a bigger SSD.

Mainstream computers being sold without a dedicated GPU are far more common in the marketplace, so it's much easier to find a deal on them. You can always buy a nice computer without a GPU on sale and then add the GPU.

Another option is build you and your son build a computer. It's fairly easy these days and can be fun and a bonding experience. If you shop around you can usually get one for a similar price or a little more than a prebuilt but you can customize it the way you want and you can choose the quality of parts used. A lot of prebuilts skimp on some components.

Unless you're an enthusiast you won't really get use of the Unlocked CPU. You could save yourself a couple bucks with a Non-K CPU.

switch out the first hard drive with an SSD - add a secondary harddrive. Keep the shitty video card it comes with and give him $300 to buy a video card of his choice.
