Didn't see this posted, lowest price I've seen on the i7 6700k in awhile. Use the $5 off printable in store coupon which can be found on retailmenot to get this price.

i7 6700k $289.99-$5 off coupon=$284.99+tax
i7 6600k $199.99-$5 off coupon=$194.99+tax

Combine it with the $30 off motherboard bundles and you have a nice deal on skylake+mobo.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Grr why does Intel do this to us, they released the i7 6950x extreme edition which is the first consumer grade cpu to contain 10 cores, 20 threads, and a 25ms l3 cache a couple days ago. Great find though op.

I guess the question is, for someone who upgrades every 6-7 years and uses it mainly for gaming (rarely video editing) would getting the i7 be better futureproofing for games that take advantage of HT? I know currently the i5 vs. i7 doesn't make much of a difference and both are easily overclocked to 4.5ghz

While it may have more cores, they're clocked lower and they are EXPENSIVE.

6790k? I haven't heard anything about a 6790k. Care to elaborate?

gaming. I will be using my own sound card, the loyal creative audigy. May be minimal overclocking.

It has 10 cores and is the first consumer grade CPU with 10 cores. The Xeon has 10 cores but is not considered consumer grade.
