Iphone 5S - London and Iceland trip - which sim card(s) to get?

Ero 2,861 945 June 6, 2016 at 10:13 AM
I have a trip to London and Iceland coming up in a few months, and an unlocked [formerly AT&T] iPhone 5S at home that I'd be looking to use.

Can someone suggest which cell carrier I can get for either country? I think I'd prefer data-only if possible.

I'll do the research on band compatibility if you don't happen to have it off the top of your head, I mostly don't know which carriers are good in those places.

Some carriers won't allow cell phones on data only hotspot/tablet plans and that's a harder point to research.

Fi is worth mentioning as it includes data at reduced speed in 120 countries, but won't work for your iPhone.

Thanks. I'm not married to going only-data... If it's possible then great; if not I'd rather just pick the carrier that'll give me the BEST data experience in most places, even if it has less minutes or costs a bit more (i.e. the equivalent of Verizon in most US places).

Also I have a cellular iPad Pro, so I'm not opposed to just getting a sim for my iPad and using google voice to dial out over data!

Fi is a good suggestion, thanks. I might look into getting a nexus since they've been popping up on the cheap. I already have a Fi sim card from the beta when I signed up.

How long are you gone for, and who is your current carrier?

It may be better to see what options your carrier has in terms of roaming packages. if it is T-Mobile, you will get data, text and phone ($0.20/Min) on both countries (the data is slow though, but I was was still able to upload Instagram/FB photos of trips through Europe, India, and Australia) if you have one of their newer plans.

Last time I was in London, here seemed to be a lot of wifi as well.

I've used an international Sim card before and honestly it was pretty over priced for crappy data.

I suggest you buy when you get there. Usually local carriers have the best options for a tourist sim. In London a few years ago I was able to get 2-3GB + calls + texts for something close to 10 GBP.

After ordering a deal immediately delete your deal alert. You got your item; you don't want it shipped with a side of remorse.

I lived in England for 5 years. I used Vodafone PAYG and post paid with zero complaints ,it's GSM so your 5S should work.
