Review for the Z400s is here [tomshardware.com]. It's MLC but has no SDRAM buffer so it's relatively slow.

You're comparing apples and oranges in this case. The internal drive listed here is a NAS drive, specifically designed for 24/7 usage. Those always are at a slight premium. Aside from that, external drives are typically considered for archival purposes so they're often at lower RPMs.

External drives are typically used intermittently or sparingly for backup. Less wear versus an internal drive that is always on (since most people don't turn off their computers).

The counterargument to that is heat. Most companies have an oven for an enclosure for their externals.

Most externals will be 5400/5700rpm. Not many are 7200rpm. And ones that are tend to be overpriced. So if you need the extra speed, you're best bet is to buy an internal 7200rpm and put it in an enclosure.

You are rolling the dice far harder on how long it'll last. And the warranty will only protect you against (essentially) immediate failure and nothing else.

Personal opinion is to only buy Rebuilt HDDs if they are substantially cheaper like this one and you have a redundant setup like RAID1+.

That promo code gives me a message that it's not valid with my e-mail.
