Should I buy the $50 Amazon 7" Fire tablet?

floatee 18 10 June 9, 2016 at 06:39 AM
I've had two Nexus 7s that've crapped out on me for various reasons, the latest one being riddled with problems since I got it six months ago. So, no more N-7s for me.
I thought about the ipad mini 4 that i can get right now for 299 on sale, but i've never liked apple products. over priced, imho.
which brings me to the cheapo 50 buck fire. assuming i liked everything about the nexus in terms of basic functionality, how disappointed might i be w the fire?
i used to think i'd do a lot w/ a tab, but now it's down to surfing the web, checking in on the Chive, and watching a few movies on Netflix. and reading books, which i assume will be about the same on both the fire and the nexus.
thoughts anyone?

Last time I knew you didn't get the Google Play store on the Fire Tablets out of the box. You had to side load them to get all your google apps.

Not sure which Nexus 7's you had but know that the specs of this $50 Fire tablet are lower especially for the 2013 nexus 7. The biggest one for me is the low screen resolution. Yes it's cheap but I would rather pay more and get something I want to use then something cheap that you don't want to use because the screen is poor. I made that mistake with a laptop once and I just never used it. Since buying a better model I use the laptop alot more.

I would definitely say no for the $50 Amazon 7" Fire tablet, i bought it last month when there was a deal for $40.
I didnt like it, it says quad core, but it didnt appear fast enough, also the display isnt that good, i know we shouln't expect a lot for $50, however even for regular tasks like browsing i didnt find it much effective. May be would be good for the kids. The battery is also good

I bought a 7" Fire tablet last month when it was $40. Prior to turning it on, I inserted a 32GB microSD card.

If you don't have a microSDcard all of your apps etc must be stored on the included 8GB of internal memory and close to half of that is already used by the OS.

Since the card was already inserted before start up, I didn't have to go through these settings.

I added Google Apps/Playstore using this video (play, pause, do a step, then repeat, until complete)....very easy.

For me, it is the best of both worlds, since I have Amazon Prime.

It is not the best tablet available, but is perfect for me...and the price is easy on the wallet. If you hate it, give it to a child or your mom/dad. It is definitely worth trying. And as far as I know, Amazon has a 30 day return policy.

You could even consider a used HD tablet from Amazon, but I don't think that any except the fire accept microSD cards, so you would need to purchase one with additional internal memory.

I too curse my N7 (2012), which died an early death.

thanks, all. i might just give it a go and return it if i don't like it. i do have an extra micro sd card and i have no problem doing stuff like sideloading and rooting. i just don't want the thing to be laggy and buggy. but, for 50 clams and with a 30-day-return period, what do i have to lose?
welp, guess i've talked himself into it .

This is still true. You can easily root the Fires now.

Have you considered a chinese tablet? You can get one for less than $100 that is 8 inches with high def screens. They are decent quality.

thanks. i bought it a few days ago and got a 10 dollar price adjustment from A today. it arrived two hours ago. so far, the screen is noticeably less crisp, but that's about all i can tell. will have to play w/ it a bit more. will return later w/ update.

well, that didn't take long. i put a few of my videos on it and some of them wouldn't play (ie, bogged down 20 seconds in) or were highly pixilated. Oh well.
so ... what should i try now?
and don't say nexus 7. i've been burned twice and don't want to try for a third.
i might see if i like an apple mini.

I put the movies on a class 10 microSD card and use this player:

https://play.google.com/store/app...dia.player

I can play MP4, MKV and AVI movies although I have only watched a few.

i don't have google play yet, but i have installed a few other players, including VLC. Lagging still. The I read up a bit and found that I probably encoded the vids at too high a bit rate, so I recoded the worst offender and it played straight through the nexus did not have this problem, however.

decided i don't want an apple. now i'm thinking about the samsung s2 at around 300 or 4. sure wish there was something around 150, or than the nexus, the worked really well and had a better screen than the 50$ machine.

Cant use google play without that risky side loader.

I don't think there was anything 'risky' about it.

so, i've gone from 50 to 140 to 199. i hope the buck ends here!
