Currently, it says "$0.99 Shipping (restrictions apply)" for this BD reader.

Product page is shared between BD reader (this item, for $20.99 after $20 rebate) and BD writer (different model, for $74.99 after $25 rebate).

The shipping is $2.99 for the BD writer.

Also, both models have a significant amount of negative ratings (25%-30%).

Hmm...it says write on BD-R DL is 8x. However, I don't see any other BD format supported.

So it only writes BDR DL? But it reads all bluray, right? Thanks.

Are the external blu ray players region dependent or can play blu ray's from all regions?

FWIW, Just to clarify for those that might think this could be a Blu-Ray burner...
Unfortunately, the day of the $20 Blu-Ray burner has not arrived...

It looks like Newegg has [intentionally?] screwed up the specs [again] shown to make it appear that it does write/burn Blu-Rays.

The ACTUAL specs for this drive are at https://www.asus.com/us/Optical-D...fications/

Can't imagine how slow this thing is on USB 2.0.

I don't think they intentionally messed up the specs, but it a Blu-ray Reader ONLY and DVD Writer.

If you consider that a DVD Writer will cost about $10 AR, paying an $11 premium to read Blu-ray movies isn't that bad. This is the lowest price this particular model has ever been.

A Blu-ray Burner will cost about $14 to $19 more on sale, after rebate.

USB 3.0 won't improve speed because the 6x max speed for slim optical drives doesn't saturate the USB 2.0 interface.

Can this play blurays? Or do you need separate software?

Can anyone answer this question? I'm tempted to buy this even though I hate rebates, but I want to be able to play commercial bluray movies thru this to my new 1080p laptop.

Edit:

The product info says
"Blu-ray 3D Support
ASUS supports latest Blu-ray 3D technology, but the Blu-ray playback software is subjected to change by area. Please check with your supplier for exact offers.", implying that 'Blu-ray playback software' may be included.

The Specifications tab has this:

Software Contents
Cyberlink Power2Go 7
Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 with Magic Cinema (Optional, Pro Only)
Cyberlink PowerBackup 2.5 (Optional, Pro Only)
Cyberlink InstantBurn 5 (Optional, Pro Only)
TurboEngine

Edit conclusion: Looks like you have to pay additional money to get software that will play bluray movies. Bummer...

I bought this (the BD Writer) from a previous deal about 6 months ago (guessing) and it failed the other day. Specifically, it was the power source that failed.
