If it was a 8TB around $300 I would have jumped on it.

What's the difference between NAS vs the desktop version?

I've had three of these running in a Synology NAS for almost two years with no problems whatsoever. They're a bit louder, but also a bit faster than competitors' (WD, Seagate) drives, and that was a tradeoff I was willing to make. Especially because many publications have found HGST drives to last longer than the competition.

Sometimes the warranty is longer on a "NAS" drive.

The simplest answer is:
NAS are meant to be run in 24/7 environments and hold up. Desktop is for home use.

SD should make a script that drops all HGST 7200rpm 4TB sales as being a waste of time unless they finally get under $130 each shipped. it's been on "sale" for $140 over the past 3 years... LOL

It's been on sale, but not continuously, and usually from Frys and with no quantity and coupon codes that don't work. This is still a great deal for anyone who needs a 4TB drive now!

last time I purchased a hdd from newegg was about 9 years ago, can I safely assume that they've ironed out the poor hdd shipping problems?

I never had HD shipping problems with them, from the Egghead days going forward.

Considering the reds retail around $150, this is a much better price on a better drive. Consider the quality of the drive you are getting for that price. It isn't just about cheap price, if so, go for a cheaper WD or Seagate, i.e. 3yr warranty drives.
