Does anyone really care about backlit keyboards on laptops?

I recently came up with the idea to post this as I received much resistance on a laptop deal that had very high end specs but then ruined it all for me with the lack of the backlit keyboard. While I know a lot of people value backlit keyboard and they are becoming more and more standard (even 80 dollar chromebooks are implementing keyboard backlighting). There are many "purists" who seem to think that backlit is unnecessary, only for people who can't type without looking at their hands, stupid.., or they just don't want it. I'd be curious to see what the consensus is on this. Do people want backlit keyboards on their laptops or not? I personally have all backlit keyboards on my laptops and do not need to look at my hands to type so that theory of being blind without illuminated keys just astonishes me. I do feel it gives the computer a more premium look and yea when there is no light on in the room it helps to see the function/special keys instead of aiming the screen at the keyboard for light as one member had advised.

I'd love to have a backlit keyboard on my old Samsung laptop. I mostly use a desktop, which has a different keyboard layout for all of the "extra" keys, like home, end, page up/down, arrow keys, etc. so touch typing on the laptop goes out the window when I need to use those. Frown

I'd buy a replacement keyboard if anyone made one to fit my laptop.

Nope. I want a good tacile feel and easy to clean. This Toshiba has neither, but the keys light up :eyeroll:

What I wish it had is a power switch somewhere other than on the side where you grab the laptop to set it aside. No, I really didn't want to power down...

Lol i wasn't mentioning that other features would be sacrificed to accommodate the backlit keyboard. Obviously we all want good tactile keys but is there a disadvantage to also having backlit?

On a laptop, my make or break features for myself are backlit keyboards and high screen resolution. But that's for me, I find that lots of people don't care or even know those options exist.

You can add an SSD, you can upgrade RAM, but you need to buy a high resolution screen and a backlit keyboard. Oh, and don't forget decent hinges!

Gimmicks come and go, useful features stick around. Backlit keyboards have been around for quite some time. That leads me to believe that a touch typist like myself am not the only one that finds that feature useful.

In a couple decades when all the old people are gone everyone will know how to type and back light will be right beside VHS taped.

Not essential, but in this day and age, why wouldn't any decent laptop have a back lit keyboard? Seriously what are they saving $5 on the build to not put in some leds?

not having leds is not really a deal breaker for me. they do look good on some gaming laptops.

I always viewed it like a sunroof on a car. Never necessary but after you have one you don't want to go back to living without. Those that don't value them most likely only use theirs in well lit offices or not much at all.

Tip for those who seem to be math challenged... In a couple of decades, it will be YOU that the world considers old. Wink

Definitely a must for low light working conditions. I can type just fine blind, but once I need to start hitting number keys or any other key I can't see crap.

Disadvantage would be off angle light bleed. But you can usually turn keyboard back lighting off if you want.
