The brand U.S. Polo Assn. is the actual brand of the association that runs the sport of polo. The U.S. Polo Assn brand is sold by the United States Polo Association and the money made goes into supporting the game of polo, scholarships and work opportunities for young players.

Let me ask you again - why Ralph Lauren?

I think trash is a bit strong...and I'm not sure they are knockoffs. That said, I agree money would be better spent on a higher quality product, such as RL polos, or those from other premium manufacturers (Lacoste and others also make quality shirts).

Is U.S. Polo Assn the original...MAYBE. I'd have to research it to say for sure, but I don't care enough to do that.

Are U.S. Polo Assn shirts greater or better than Ralph Lauren...umm no, not any any way, other than perhaps price depending on your position on what constitutes a value.

Supporting polo players/fundraisers/charities/etc is fine and well, but the reason for buying Ralph Lauren is for buying a higher quality, longer lasting, and what is generally accepted to be a better looking/more fashionable garment (along with the prevailing societal factors described below). Ralph Lauren polo shirts are made with better fabrics, dyes/dying processes, and higher quality construction, leading to a better fitting, better looking, longer lasting shirts long term.

* I know people that have budget polo shirts such as this (and others) that are faded, have waffled collars and hems, and sometimes even loose/undone stitching after only 6 months to a year. I (and family/friends/etc) have genuine RL Polos that are 3-4 years old (and older) that still have deep colors, crisp collars, and tight seams.

In addition (and this isn't meant to sound snobby but rather is just a sobering view of reality) most people can easily differentiate a genuine RL polo from a Polo Assn shirt (or other such shirts), and most know the RL ones cost $50-80/each. As a result, many people associate those wearing such higher end clothing with being wealthier/cleaner/smarter/more attractive/generally higher class people (which isn't necessarily fair or accurate, but that's reality), and that's worth quite a bit in such a society for many reasons (personal/professional/etc...as vain as that may sound/be).
