Now this is better than Staples if you could utilize Kohl's cash. Have Nest 2 since last 18 months and it's good. Don't feel the need to upgrade though.

why not just sign a contract with an electricity company and get it for free? In Texas many electricity providers do that.

There's a certain rebate site that offers 6% + 3% on their CC back at Kohls.

Probably because Texas is super-unique. Most states don't allow you to switch electrical resellers at will and sign contracts.
Most states require you to use the local electrical utility in the area(probably Oncor where you live in Texas) and you don't even get to haggle over you rate.

Oh I didn't know that. Oncor is the main one but I guess there are resellers like reliant, bounce, direct energy etc. I am glad Texas has all these options. Smilie

Never head of that. Iowa and Illinois let you switch

Michigan doesn't let you switch. You have one provider in your area and you just pick it (at least in my area) Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Now if we can get Google Fiber spreaded all over Texas that would be great.

It's been 2 months since we 'forced' to switch from Verizon to Frontier.. and I already hate it..

As a Texan who's done the math, the free Nest plans ALWAYS cost far more than other options. Depending on where you live, go to Powertochoose.com [Powertochoose.com] to find the cheapest plan.

My contract was up last month and got a plan with Gexa (12-month contract) which averages under 6 cents/kWh. The cheapest "Free Nest" plan that I saw was 12.9 cents/kWh with a 2-year contract. Long story short, the Nest is never free.

I just replaced two Nest thermostats with the Ecobee from Home Depot. I'm managing them from my Samsung smart things app. My hvac guy says he has been discouraging people from using the nest and other smart thermostats but after seeing mine work he is going to try the Ecobee at his home.

Austin checking in. We have one provider, Austin Energy. They do give a rebate for nest/ ecobee of $80, so not free but it helps! I do know that it is deregulated in Houston and I think Dallas so they get their pick of the litter.

Still waiting for google fiber too Frown 3 years in and probably 10% of the city has access to it.

My location of both thermostats suck. One is in a bedroom (WTF) and the other in a hallway. If we get these I guess it would be best to turn the auto home/away feature off.
