This isn't a good deal. The price is okay but slim external DVD drives are regularly <$20. A USB 3 plug is unnecessary for DVD drives.

I do like this question and response though: "Can I use this to rip dvds to my Mac?"

YINENN: "Nope but it can be play and burner DVD on the Mac ."

I know there are legal reasons to not encourage DVD ripping (of content protected disks) but saying "No, our drive cannot rip" is saying that it doesn't have the same functionality as any other external DVD drive. What a way to advertise your "$80" product ("discounted" to only $32 before the coupon).

No, they don't max out USB 2. The fastest drives will theoretically peak at almost 32 MB/s, which is well under the theoretical peak of USB 2.

You can get a name brand Samsung or LG for about the same price, maybes purple bucks more. There are already plenty of other generics for this same price on Amazon.

I have been using a cheap USB 2 to Sata adapter with a full size internal optical drive and even that isn't throttled by the USB 2 so there is no way this slim drive can use the extra boost from USB 3.

Agree. The only benefit of USB 3.0 is probably the power supply. USB 3.0 support 900mA, while USB 2.0 500mA. Although, for DVD player usually it is not an issue. shake head

Did I miss something? Newegg often has slim external DVD writer sold at 10 bucks AR. And that was ASUS. This brand, never heard of it.
