I'll take WAZE over any radar detector.

Just follow the speed limit! My wife got 4 red light cam tickets which we knew nothing about until they ended up on my credit report. Moral of the story is that everything is being watched so just follow the law. Next thing you know we're going to have speeding cams (which are in force around Chicago schools). How will a radar detector help you in that situation?

TL;DR - yes, follow the speed limit, especially in school zones and neighborhoods - but a radar detector can still help you in that situation.

Speeding cams are basically static radar (or laser but more likely radar) that has a cam attached to them to snap a pic if above a certain speed.

So a radar/laser detector should still alert you to those and actually alert you earlier because the radar in speed cams are always on, whereas a police officer can use a trigger to turn/off the radar at will if they want.

If you live in a state where radars are illegal then the devices that are programmed with the location of speedcams can help.

Don't underestimate how far they will go. The speed cam manufacturer will keep the radar off until the camera trips it back on. At that point it's already too late to slow down. Not only will they have your initial speed, they will have film of you slamming on the brakes. These things will be more efficient than human cops holding a radar gun.

The true moral of the story is that your government will do almost anything to take more money from you. Using a phone app like waze or a radar detector will save you from paying more to your government by giving you appropriate warnings.

But they are not there yet. A radar detector is a good defense against stationary radar traps that have not yet been recorded by another waze user. Best to have both!
