Crucial has a great tool to help figure out what you need:

Would it be silly of me to split the 16GB pair and put one stick in each of my laptops (for 12GB & 10GB respectively).

They say it works better when it's paired but you could do that and then down the road do the rest

"Dual channel" (faster, better, but not noticeable unless gaming or photoshoping) can only be enabled on same spec sticks. Will work fine in single channel mode and you won't be able to tell the difference.

That's not necessarily true. With supported boards, it will act as dual channel up to the amount that matches, and the rest will be single channel. If, let's say, you have 2 gb and 4gb, 4gb will act as dual while the last 2 will act as single.

I'm not a computer savvy but my desktop has 1 bar like this and its 4gb. There are spaces for another 2. Can I put these 2 8gb on or it has to be all 4gb?
Mine says ddr3l 1600...does it have to match all that figures?

We appear to have the same machine and question. Sadly, the answer appears to be no. Needs DDR2. http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/com...piron-1545

yes, no, no, but you need to verify you max support so not to waste.

I used one for about 5-6 years.. I upgraded the cpu and ram to 8gb. The 4gb sticks for that laptop were $50+ each used when I bought them a few years ago. PC2-6400 8gb kits still aren't cheap. I believe there's more then one version of the motherboard and some of them can support 8gb, the rest can support 4gb.

Its only sata 2 but you're better off putting 4gb in it and an ssd if you're gonna keep it. That model is like 7 years old at this point so not much you can do beyond that.
