I thought it was a prequel not a remake?

You're correct. The 2011 film is a prequel to the 1982 remake of the 1950s film.

The 1982 remake is an intense thrill ride - one of the best sci-fi/horror movies of all time, and it still holds up nod

JC's 1982 version is a must, the 2011 prequel could've been so much worse!

Heads up, they are releasing a new SE of the 1982 movie.
Not sure if it is a different transfer or not.

I loved the 1982 version but I did not enjoy the 2011 prequel, I dont recall even finishing the last 15 minutes of the 2011 movie out of disinterest

The original is one of my all time Sci fi horror movies next to alien. The practical effects still look amazing to me even today. Wish they did more practical stuff like this nowadays.

When I first saw it in the 80's I had to sleep with the light on for a week afterwards. Really, REALLY good movie!

The 1982 Thing is my favorite horror movie ever made. The practical effects alone make it terrifying, and I think they fully hold up today. I would much rather see a practical effect horror movie than most of the garbage they are making today.

That said, I thought the 2011 movie was great! The tie-ins and attention to detail that they used to link it to the original movie was fantastic. Go ahead, watch the 2011 movie and then the 1982 one directly after. Not as good as the original, but by prequel/sequel standards, they pulled it off better than most I've seen.
