Do I Need Another Windows License?

momof2plustwins 1,221 942 June 25, 2016 at 10:47 AM
I upgraded my Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 for free. I have a new cpu, motherboard and case ready to put a brand new SSD in along side my current hard-drive, gpu and psu. From my understanding my windows will not transfer and I'd need a new key as it's tied to the motherboard. Is this correct or would I be able to download a copy of Windows 10 on the new SSD and move forward on completing my pc grade?

I don't think it matters if it was a retail win 7 or oem at this point. To my knowledge the win 10 upgrades are considered oem and tied to motherboard. The original license is forfeited and becomes a win 10 oem license. So Yes you need a new copy.

With that said I would build ASAP and make sure the original system is offline. I would load win 7 copy you have and activate. If it was a retail you could argue you did not lime win 10 with MS and were downgrading back to win 7. They would activate it and you could go to win 10for free before july. If it was oem you will have no recourse if win 7 will not activate on the new rig. I think it's worth a shot vs just buying a win 10 OEM copy. technically a win 10 install thun drive would ask you for the product key of the retail win 7 and activate. If its oem win 7 activating win 10 with the key will not work and the only chance is a upgrade if you get the oem to activate.

Good luck.

If you can install a valid activated version of win7, 8.x on your updated computer you still have time to get a free version of win10

It's actually July 29th 2016.

OP: Read this article it should help you out. http://www.zdnet.com/article/micr...ry-update/ If you run the fast loop on the old machine and then on the new I think it should activate ok. It's at least worth a try.

If you do go and use and older version of windows then upgrade, you don't actually need to install the old version. You can do a clean install from a USB stick of 10 and then use your old key from 7 or 8 to "activate".
