dang. I paid $140 for a 4TB HGST NAS drive [newegg.com] earlier this month. Identical specs and warranty. If I hadn't opened it already, I'd return it and get this.

I don't say it's normal price, but if you keep an eye on large hdd, you can sometimes see newegg (not bothering business) sale with code at the same price.

What HD do I need for my home server for media storage. These that say NAS or surveillance are they not recommended for use like what I need?

HGST has a much lower probably of failure based on BackBlaze's statistics. I would not necessarily say that you got hosed. Personally, I bought two $95 5 TB Seagate drives and will be using them for a home server/NAS. Since I'll be RAIDing the drives, I figured I could live with a drive failure.

Where did you see that it says NAS drives are recommended for your purpose?

"Specifically, NAS HDDs are designed for:
  • Home servers or desktop NAS solutions
  • Desktop RAID
  • Multimedia servers/storage
  • Virtualization
  • Archive and disaster recovery
  • Small-business file sharing
  • Backup servers"

I'm going to buy security cameras. Is anyone explain what is HGST NAS? How is this different from other hard drive that records surveillance? Is it good choice to record surveillance? Please help..

There happened to be a $15 off $75 running at the time for eBay purchases (which, funny enough, is going on right now as well): http://slickdeals.net/f/8865031-5tb-seagate-expansion-usb-3-0-3-5-desktop-external-hard-drive-110-free-shipping?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo1

NAS or surveillance drives will work fine for media storage, they're intended for 24x7 and cooler running than desktop drives.

NAS drives are better suited for 24x7 and small enclosures, surveillance drives are usually tuned for better write response. both will work - just subtle differences in the firmware
